There were some people who have even advised me to join the technical field rather than doing an MBA…I ignored it!  Some people might say that I did a mistake there but I don’t have any regrets. How could I compromise on a degree which I thought would be my last degree in terms of an educational level……. Of course, I don’t have any plans for PHD. I remember one of my Prof. saying –“for those who want to enter the corporate world, PHD is neither desired nor required.”

Like all the other graduates, I had also hoped that things would be different once I get my MBA degree in US. I thought I would joined any company in the entry-level position, work hard and try to get there where I want to...never realized that I had to join this so called IT consultancy just for the sake of H1, where all the things that are very likely to be fake besides my certificate.

I also know that some of our friends (who are computer engineers or IT graduates and still facing a hard time on landing a job) might have hard feelings for us because they might think that at least, to some extent, people like us are responsible for occupying their jobs. This might be true to some extent but then again it’s all for only one damn thing which we call it -H one B.

I know there are so many people like me who are in this phase, lot of them are frustrated because the things are just not working even through these consultancies, as they used to be in the past. Companies are not hiring as they used to, economy is down, job market is at the worst, and here if we think it in a very selfish way then we might say that things are getting tough day-by-day for only the people like us. As I said earlier it is only a selfish way of thinking otherwise, everybody knows that majority of the people have been suffering from this meltdown. There is nothing much we can do about it. All we can do is let’s just hope that the things start to get better, let's just go for each and every possibilities, let’s just do the things we’ve to, but let's not  let your MBA title go in vain……………At least we do have our last option of so called IT consultancy and beyond that its all future.

Any comments and suggestions are highly appreciated!

my story is similar to temptations, I completed by MBA on 2007 n started doing job search related to my field, but as time went by, I realized that most of the companies are not willing to sponsor you on the entry level, which in a result landed me on IT consultancies....totally changing my field from MBA to IT just for the sake of H1B....thts how it works out here....the other important factor that we face is financially....entering into IT on the most of the part gives some financial stability....

With the economic crisis going on its really tough to find a job.....but let that not demotivate anyone...I was working as a IT consultant for a year and finally a company offered me a full time...so things are working for me and hopefully it will work for everyone.....

Sagun!

Since, I'm purely from a management background so I don't think I'm the best person who can give you a proper advise on your situation. As far as I know it's the experience along with the degree that helps a lot in getting any kind of job in US. But it all depends upon what you want to do and how you do it...I can only suggest you to do some more research in your field of study...job market and so on.

Sagun:

there are lot of Indian/International companies that have job locations both in India and in US. Why don't you try to apply to one of those places. Eventually they will allow you to come and work in their US job sites and you can apply for MBA (evening classes) . You can work and study at the same time which is actually much better than strickly studying when it comes to doing MBA. I know a lot of Indians doing the same.

In US also, if you have degree and no experience, it is not worth a lot. A job will give you much more security in terms of finances.

This is my opinion, take it as it is:

MBA, especially for foreign students, is worth its salt only if it is from Top 10 schools.  If you graduate from, say... UPenn's Wharton, then you probably won't have to worry much about your visa status or the recession.  However, if your "Yum Bee Yay" is from some obscure university in, say Oklahoma (nothing against OK, I'm just using it as an example), then you are in for some hard time.

Sagun05, if I were you, I would go for MBA school, provided, as I said above, it is in Top 10 school.  You can check various MBA ratings such as Business Week's annual survey to find which 10 schools are at the top.  Recession should not matter to you because by the time you finish your MBA, we should be well into economic recovery.
