Dad, Dogs and Daughter

Disclaimer: They say sharing with strangers helps.

She was not exceptional, neither an average.Life always gave her intellectual opportunities in terms of best schools, best professors.

Born to an unsuccessfully successful extraordinary father, she grew up with comparison, not with the siblings but with her own father. She threw out her pink ballerina shoes and tried to fit in the brown shoes he had chosen for her.His rules, his prescriptions- she embraced all the emotional blisters of the psychologically ill-fitted shoes. All she wanted was to please him and to be praised in return.Like a little dog who had given the behavior she always waited for him to dole out some “daddy-words”.But, for him she never arrived, there was always another hill to climb, one another mountain to conquer.Au contraire, family dogs- George and Ronald would get the more than enthusiastic praise for their little non-significant tricks every time. Nonetheless, she continued quietly.

Time flew and here she stands, confident enough to make her own decisions.

The other day she heard the snippets of conversation.

“You should be proud of her.”

“Yeah, BUT…” It was a reluctant admittance from his side with a big clause attached to it.

Once again she failed to live up to his expectation. The hard work she had put on all these years became meaningless.

The world applauds her achievements, but in her world it was never appreciated. She is moving to a different intellectual direction, and he is less willing to accept it.He has something else planned for her.She is confident, but still she could not get out of the moral and psychological dilemma of defying her father. She feels worthless at this point of life.Simply worthless!

HAHAHAHA...pardon my untimely gargantuan laugh tara it amazes me, time and again, to see some people seeing the world ONLY in EITHER black OR white. What their limitations (color blindness) fail to acquire is the color which is most prominent in most, if not all, of us and that is: GREY.

I may sound illogical to many of them whose parents don't understand them (wholly or in parts) tara here's what I genuinely believe in, and it's my generic philosophy on relationships:

if parents fail to perceive the limitations of their kids, i feel, somewhere down the line, the children are also responsible, in parts, of that failure. And as "grown-up" kids, they should make sure and try their best for not being a part of that failure. The result is not as important as the effort is! And ask yourself: whether you are making that effort (honestly)?

Let's face the truth (could be bitter for some of you who think 'true' love exists ). Aba bhanna ta bhanchha ni: when you love someone, you should not expect anything in return but that only reads good in books/romantic novels, and looks good in ghisapita movies IMHO. I see all relationships as symbiotic - meaning it's a give and take deal. As simple as that. You do, at the end of it all, expect/are-expecting something in return (could be subconsciously) -- say for example: an emotional asylum (to say the least).

What's very important though, is:

1)  You should give the best of what you could for the understanding to prevail in that relationship.

2) There should be an effort and willingness, on both parties' parts, who are involved in that relationship -- as in this case: parents and kids -- to  understand that what the other party is giving OR getting is via the BEST effort from both parties.

it's easy to play the blame game coz that makes us feel less guilty of our unintended/unwanted/undesired deeds and their results/impacts-on-us.

Lastly, like my favorite candidate in the bid for becoming the president of the US says: I am ready to meet with all of them without any preconceived notions; go talk with them (your parents) instead of fooling around here in sajha!

(I hope you got the gist from my long/boring ramblings.)

Jesus Christ, Loote, she is just writing some prose. Your response is longer than the original story! LOL.

Gunyocholi

It's not "just fancy" prose (your words not mine) - it's good prose. Hence the 5 stars.
