Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has slammed Danny Boyle's Golden Globe award winning underdog drama “Slumdog Millionaire†for showing India in poor light.
“If 'Slumdog Millionaire' projects India as Third World dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations, †Amitabh said in a posting on his blog Wednesday from Paris, France.
“Its just that the 'Slumdog Millioanire' idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a westerner, gets creative global recognition, †he added.
The 66-year-old also talked about the changing trend in recognition of Indian cinema.
“The commercial escapist world of Indian cinema had vociferously battled for years, on the attention paid and the adulation given to the legendary Satyajit Ray... and not a word of appreciation for the entertaining mass-oriented box office blockbusters that were being churned out from Mumbai.
“Ray portrayed reality. While, the other - escapism, fantasy and incredulous posturing. Unimpressive for Cannes and Berlin and Venice (film festivals), †he explained.
He further wrote: “But look how rapidly all that is changing. Dedicated TV channels running Hindi cinema on prime timings. Premieres at Leicester Square (referring to 'Chandni Chowk To China'), the home of all Hollywood royalty, thronged by hundreds on the street in cold biting weather.â€

Amitabh is exactly right but what comes as contradictory is, he forgets the mirror attitude of indian cinematographer of casting Neplease over and again just as a "Watchman/Bahadur". He is absolutely right about how the poverty in india has be potrayed in the movie. "let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations". The increasing murder of "Nepalese dudes working in convenient store" speaks it all.

What bullshit this AB Budho talking about.. see, this is the problem with eastern people.... they are so envious... he should be rather praising the story written by an indian... instead he is criticizing that oh, because kuire is the director, that's why kuires are giving these awards.. what a negative gu is this amitabh, That's the story of India...very close to reality, and it's about the poor indians... that's the truth. He hiself could not bag any awards like these awards, and therfore Amitabh B is trying to twist the fact by saying, Oh thi sis not the picture of India.. Dude, this is the picture of Indian slums.. man.. c'mon... may be you never go to those slums.. hoina ta? YOu have all the luxuries, and you think all indian are living the lifestyles just like yourself... OK, if you have guts, why don't you make a movie about the rich people of India, and then try to grab the awards, and as per your logic, whole world will think about the high standard India.. ha ha.. how about using kuire director , if needed... ha ha.... Question is... what would be AB's comments had this british director made a movie based on india's rick people and then won numerous awards???? I wonder... Hey Dhoti.. Amitabh... now go and do your ass shaking acting in the movie shootings.. you assssswhole... lobhi .. about the time to die.. and still making money.. thukka saale. Haram jade...

So yeah this is the same thing that one my "Indian friends" brought up. He was very upset at the way India was portrayed in this movie. He said these kind of movies should be banned and what not. Then there were other "Indian friends" who said what they showed was what is the reality in India. They did not seem to find it offensive. As for my opinion, it is a movie, I watched it, found it quite entertaining. It's plain old love story, but created in an interesting way. Yes, they showed India in a poor light, and must admit there might have been a time or two when I might have enjoyed this very thing. It's just a commercial movie and I don't think the director, writer, producer or anyone else for that matter owe it to anyone to project India in a good way. They are just making a movie, just trying to make money. And yeah, someone already mentioned in this thread, if you watch Hindi movies, there are quite a few where all they think Nepal is, is a land of Gurkhas/Bahadurs and that too in a demeaning way. So when I mentioned this (one of my other "Indian friends" mentioned a movie Gharwali Baharwali and the ridiculous potrayal of some assumed culture in Nepal), he said such movies should be banned. Well, that movie did end up getting banned in Nepal. He feels the same way about Slumdog now, as we possibly did when we watched that sort of Hindi movie; so I guess it's all okay. That's how it works, a bigger nation (culture) just enjoys bullying those smaller time and again. Just take it with a pinch of salt.

I didn't know Big B started writing blog!!!Anyway I was never a fan of Amitabh. I think Kamal Hasan is better actor. Slumdogg millionaire is the true respresentation of India, the nation who is trying to cover up the poverty and want to present itself as first world country esepecially rich people like Amithabh. Try this movie "salaam bombay" thats worth watching talks about the slum in better way. It is directed by Mira Nair, one of the best director. p.s. Big B is jealous of slumdogg millionaire achievement.

This old fart is in Paris, France making comments. He does not like the slum story, which is a true portrait of majority of Indians. I was in India 4 years ago in Guwahati. I felt pretty on one Beggar and gave him some coins. Next thing I remember I was chased by literally hundreds of beggars. I was scared and ran away. I dont think these things have chanced in last 4-5 years.

To me, Satyajit Ray is no doubt a great director but Danny did show the real picture of India, the slums, child expoitation, overcrowded classrooms but at the same time the emerging economy..Amitabh is just ashamed of the poverty in India and wants to hide the facts,movie r not always about glamour and wealth a. Slum dog is way more real that most of Amitabhs movies.Its not the best movie ive seen but i did like the movie.

Portraying Nepalese as a watchman/bahadur is racist, but portraying the slum of a country don't fall in the same category and is not racist.The movie is about slum and its not about mahal. It's the story written by Indian and it is just showing kids living in a slum. What's so offensive about it?The movie shows from slum to thriving economy of Bombay, what is wrong with that? What else they want more than that?After all India has the highest number of child beggar than any country. Some moronic people are proud to boast how many billionare lives in India but compeletly ignores the poor people of the country. So should we feel offensive when every time the news agency tag Nepal as "one of the poorest country" in the world befor e saying any news.

Bachchan denies Slumdog criticism |

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan has denied criticising award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.
The actor says opinions posted on his blog criticising the film for projecting India as the "third world dirty underbelly", were made by others.
He says he merely put up the comments, which he did not attribute, to start a debate and is anguished that they have been construed to be his.
Mr Bachchan is India's best-known actor and has a massive fan following.
Slumdog Millionaire, made by British director Danny Boyle, has swept the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice awards. The film is also a favourite to win at the Oscars.
'Invited debate'
"What a colossal joke this is all turning out to be! Without reading the text of my blog or the purpose behind mention of 'SlumDog' an entire machinery of abuse has been directed towards me," Mr Bachchan writes in his blog.
"Fact is - some one mentioned the film on my blog. Some expressed opinion for it, some against. And yes, they contained some strong assumptions. I merely put both of them up and invited debate," he says.

Mr Bachchan blames the media for taking the "pros and cons of others" and reporting them as his.
"And now, after having castigated me for something not attributable to me, [the media] has made my real opinion on the film after seeing it, impossible. If I do not like it, there will be greater abuse. If I like it, there will be abuse."
Earlier, an entry on the actor's blog read: "If SM (Slumdog Millionaire) projects India as [a] Third World dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations.
"It's just that the SM idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a Westerner, gets creative [Golden] Globe recognition. The other would perhaps not."
Slumdog Millionaire opens in India next week. The film has been nominated in 11 categories for next month's British Academy Film Awards.
A rags-to-riches tale of an improbable winner of game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the film is based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's book.
Mr Bachchan's career spans almost 40 years. He has acted in more than 140 movies.
He starred in the legendary Hindi movie Sholay and hosted the first three seasons of Kaun Banega Crorepati (Who Wants to be a Millionaire).

OK here's the thing 1 Billion (with the "B") Indians knows AB throughout the world. 1 Billion (with the "B") Chinese knows Jackie Chan through the world, plus many Westerners. Jackie is more popular than AB, period. Jackie has always commented poorly of his own movies and dreams about playing roles like those of Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino, a wishful thinking, saying he simply wants to act in world class movies. Whether it will be true or not, at least he admits his movies are a joke, unlike AB who is simply an arrogant, ethnocentric, rich, and a famous Indian. Imagine how he treats his servants and other poor Indians in his day to day life.
