guys,

i'm switching to unix based os in my dell xps m1530, from vista. vista
ain't bad but i'd like to have more freedom with my os, which obviously
isn't an option with vista.

any suggestions to which one i should install? i currently have ubuntu
too but it hasn't impressed me much. how is fedora? or wolvix? mandriva? openSUSE? or even
our old redhat? or any other?

there are hardware compatibility issues too, so suggestions from anyone who's actually done on a similar system is appreciated.

also any and all suggestions welcome.

and please don't junk up the thread with useless messages....to the point talks only

thanks

system: 2.4 gig intel2 duo; 4 gig ram, 250 hd, nvidia 8600 256 mb grafix

In terms of Hardware compatibility i prefer Ubuntu's Hardy heron..Have been Using Ubuntu for the last 1 and half year , found it awesome..Moreover, Ubuntu's forum are very helpful if u run into any trouble unlike other Distro's..

My system is

Extensa 5420,AMD Turion 64X2 mobile technology,2gb ram,Graphics by ATI radeon express

You may run into compatibilty Issues with Wireless card...But u can use madwifi driver to patch up your wirelss card..

Issues that i had with Ubuntu
My Webcam and inbuilt Microphone is not working for a zillion time..Tried every trick in the book but somehow couldn't make it work..

Bhikhaari,

I've been using ArchLinux on and off between the years and frankly must say its one of the most flexible *nix systems out there.

The reason is because its a install as you go system where when you need something you install it hereby you end up with a finely tailored product. Offcourse you will need to bear with some manpages, but it shouldn't be that hard.

I personally never liked Ubuntu, but it is definitely the easiest to install and is pretty robust at what it does too. :)

Archlinux community resides in IRC so if you have questions they get answered in real time.

Peace.
