Publications , findings and innovations are important for economic transformation........

It also represents the country at international level.

I am not sure, how many years from now it might take for Nepal based scientific laboratory to catch the trends and start contributing in the field.

We all wish, we could see it soon....

Prachanda is responsible. Before it was King Gyanendra now it is Prachanda. You can count YCL as semi responsible.

international level................hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!! first we have to come up at local and regional level then we can talk about international level.

we are so good at blame game and finger pointing. okay, do you know who is the minister for science and technology? do you know RONAST? it is on nepalnews.com webpage. you can find all the ministers and some even have biodata. check it out.

nepal is an open area for all kinds of research and studies but we don't have resources. we don't have 24/7 electric power to fuel our computers (we still use hands down omputers) and other infrastructures are also weak. our leaders are old school types. don't know what the heck is going around??

first thing is we have to have strong manpower and strong infrastrutures.

another thing - there are proffs who has done great researches in fragile ecosystems of nepal but their paper hardly comes out.

i have started to do something different. i did a research in nepal and going to publish that paper in 'Remote Sensing of Environment' - an internationally reknowned journal. u don't have to be in nepal to do something. u can use resources of developed country to develop ur country.

hope you have the answer now.

All the big research institutions like NAST and major natural science departments and other offices in TU are controlled NEWAR professor. They will never allow anyone who is honest and hard working in these institutions. They are very biased people. They are not productive at all. Therefore majority of honest and hardworking scientist are forced to flew away. Do not expect any scientific publication from nepal until NEWAR scientist are in power.

I know few Nepalese who are medical or public health background are working hard in their publication.

If you are talking about Nepalese publishing their work in health sector- there are some. Majority of such work are based abroad, of course there are some from Teaching hospital and other medical college such as Medical College (Dharan), Manipal Medical college, Kathmandu medical college etc.

I admit here that the system of competition for research has not been establish yet in context of Nepal.

Snowfed, I know what is Ronast , Nast, Forensic lab, KMC and MMC are doing. Let's forget other university like TU or PU. Regarding infrasturcture, if there is need, there will be way. I don't count on politician. They are the slaves of public but they pretend to forget the master often.

For example, there are several labs like microbiology, chemistry, botany, zoology, physics, geology, etc Are these department making publications in same ratio? I doubt on Dharan's satisfaction on publication coming from Nepal.
Dharan, you can explore www.pubmed.com is good source to view research publication, I don't see any since 2006 in this site, is your information correct?

For me what you know is not important, how you know the things are important.

okies I will speak from engineering point of view in this topic...

A student who has passed bachelor in engineering field may yet never known what an IEEE paper looks like or what is it's format. Students may have not even wrote a single term paper during their course of four years. Like most of the deficiency in Nepalese education I believe this can't be blamed on infrastructure...coz everything is easily available in the net.
Firstly blaming on professor would be very wrong. Infact, finding a professor teaching for engineering fields is very difficult. Usually it is a senior who has just completed his bachelor's recently. Most of the student after sometime just go to abroad and most private engineering colleges have gave up idea of good teachers. They are just lucky to find a teacher.
Field such as engineering which is in research front, has yet to start a research culture in nepal. A professor or teacher in an engineering institution is assumed to have duty of teaching only.Besides, there is no fund allocated by anyone for research purpose. Neither there is will by the government to bring up projects for the purpose of survey to educational institutes nor by private sector. Under these circumstances...what research will come out is your's and mine guess. There might one or two paper coming out, that too using data of experiment carried by someone else on simulation and analysis..
Besides there is very poor infrastructure and hardly enough equipment to do anything substantial. And even most of the engineering institution aren't also keen on this. They are just producing batch of unskilled engineers, filled with theoretical knowledge. There is nothing called tenure track....Teachers are meant for teaching nothingelse

Hey Sajhabahadur,

First of all, I am NOT saying the research papers coming out of our homeland is satisfactory. Also, I just checked pubmed (which is one of the most common search engine in medical/public health field), typing "Nepal" as a search term- it gave me 4606 publications in 231 pages and the most recent was published in March, 2009. If you use following words from common Nepali lastname;

a.) Shrestha- 1056 paper- most recent 2009, March

b.) Pokhrel- 98- most recent 2009, Jan

c.) Limbu- 15- most recent 2006, Jan

d.) Dhakal- 56- most recent 2009.

And the list goes on. If you use "Teaching Hospital Tribhuvan University" it will result 78- most recent 2009  feb.

I can imagine that a good proportion of Nepalese (in home or abroad) are doing great in ths field at least as I don't about other fields.

Hope this helps sajha bahadur

Thanks

Dharan

Please put a word "NOT" before "saying satisfactory" in my earlier postings.

Thanks

Dharan
