started drinking beer when I was 11 (not proud of it, but hey that is our culture, so no moral regrets)---'star' beer I believe---pretty strong and got you 'jhyap' fast.

Then we had "iceberg", "cheers" (I am a bit confused on that, but I remember a commercial where a guy would chop wood all day and then drink that frothy beer in front of a campfire at night hehe)

Now we have San Miguel, Tuborg, Carlsberg amongst others. Must say I like them all, but prefer Tuborg over the rest and try to drink as much as I can when I am there.

But I am not an beer expert, and would like to know which one would rule the roost if they were all to be compared side by side? And how many different types of beer are available in Nepal nowadays?

I too liked Tuborg. It gives little faster effect as compared to other beers, it may have slightly more percentage of alcohol i guess. San Miguel is okay, but Calsberg is like drinking sprite, very very soft.

Remember that commercial ---Tu, tu, tu....Tuborg---when it first got launched? was a big deal back then

Poon--I believe they carry San Miguel and Carlsberg at select Trader Joe's as well, but the alcohol content is really not up to par.

I have not seen Tuborg here. If anyone knows where to get one, your input would be greatly appreciated.

Jhyalincha, ke ho 11 barsa ko umer dekhi khaana thaaleko? Tuborg is available at some of the larger liquor stores, so are San Miguel and Carlsberg. The best Nepali beer I have had is Star but unfortunately its' production has been ceased for the last few years. I think Gorkha and Everest are the ones of Nepali origin that are still available (or at least that was the case two years ago).

I grew up listening to radio commercials of Golden Eagle and Iceberg. I think both of them are of Indian origin. Cheers and Leo were also of Nepali origin if I am not mistaken. I was too young back then to get a chance to try them. I remember the TV ad of Leo in which a hunter was shown enjoying Leo after shooting down a Lion. "सिंहको मुटुको रस हालेर बनाएको बियर" भनेर गफ लगाउँथे स्कुलका केटाहरु फेरि।

Oranjboom of Dutch origin was also recently launched when I was last in Nepal two years ago. I didn't like it that much.

During the late 90's, Tiger (Singapore) and Singha (Thailand) were also briefly brewed in Nepal. Guiness pani banaauthyo jasto laagchha. Corona, imported from Mexico, also used to be available in 2004. Our waiter once had suggested "Mexico baata aaeko naya beer Corona pani chha" but I declined it as I had always been indifferent towards it.

thanks chipledhunga, I do remember Golden Eagle and Leo (and that commerical too) now. I think Golden Eagle was extremely popular at one time, before Iceberg killed it. And didnt our very own D. Bajracharya have a beer commercial as well?

I dont know about Singha and Tiger beer in Nepal, maybe they came and went while I was still in a F1 status and could not leave the US.. I have had plenty of Singha in Thailand though....decent enough beer.

BTW, do you guys remember how they used to sell open bottles of beer in Mugling? I remember once getting Iceberg where the cap was loosely placed on top, and the beer smelled more like the "shree" liquor than actual beer.

I remember, one of my relative came for a vacation from S'pore and even bought 2 cases of TIGER Beer. I was like "U Serious ?" They wear Tiger Beer T-shirt and cap and everything. They really take their Tiger Beer seriously man. That was really strange to me. Its like the GUINNESS to Irish people.
