Newar reign over the valley and their sovereignty and influence
over neighboring territories ended approximately 250 years ago with the
conquest of the Kathmandu valley in 1769 by the Gorkhali Shah dynasty founded by Prithvi Narayan Shah.
Newars were engaged in business between Tibet and Moguls in India. So,
to affect the Mogul empire's treasury, British East India Company
supplied weapons and advice to Prithvi Narayan Shah who in return would
conquer kathmandu valley and put an end to the trade between Tibet and
Moguls of India. Systematic brutal suppression of newar people was
pursued for generations during early shah dynasty rule in order to
discourage newar people from any political aspiration.

So continued the reign of silent repression, where newars were suppressed in more that one way. Today the most part of what Nepal's beauty of cultural heritage is due to newars. But, the period of silent oppression was so much that nowdays, newar have forgotten who they are really and most of them have become selfish and lost in this materialistic world. We all know who is adhi kabi of khas bhasa, who is maha kabi..but do we know about nepal bhasa's adhi kabi? do we know who is maha kabi of nepal bhasa? So, the period of silent oppression was very brutal for most part. There are so many text and books that have been there for more than half  millenia and over millenium old in nepal bhasa, yet we don't even know that it exists. Even the ancient tibetian chant Om maney ..is all written in nepal bhasa.. For most people we are all satisfied with dev nagari..but one of the oldest script are also some nepal bhasa scripts. There are also so many old scripts like bhujimol, prachalit..which have been there for over two millenium..Infact there have been found 13 scripts of nepal bhasa like golmol,litumol..etc...Such was the silent repression. Nobody knows of them, even newars...Okies, if you guys ever wonder why there are so less newar people in politics, it's because of the language. When your mother tongue is something else it is always difficult to express in other language unless you put in great effort. And think of the fact, it was even made compulsory to sanskrit in schools in some of the years. How do you expect newars to go forward in such repressed society? But newars have forgotten all of that. Nepal sambat was being used even in shah dynasty until ranas came along. They came and replaced nepal sambat with bikram sambat which has nothing to do with nepal whose originator was some king from gujrat. Infact I don't think shah and ranas did anything good in entire 200 yrs to our country then to leave it in darkness. They never allowed society to progess.

So it's been over 200 years of silent repression. Wake up newars do something for your country. The problem with newars are they are too laid back and very selfish. Now the country is in hands of mostly corrupt bahune politicans who have no moral standing. There isn't any political party that truly acts on will of nepali people. Just see nepali congress, the party who proclaim that they brought democracy to nepal. It is indeed full of nepotism and bahune baad. They never allow any young people or youth neta to rise.. UML is totally party without ethics.. Maobadi ta baee halyo terrorist...jungle bata akoo manchey lai desh chalauna k aouncha. Even though most newars are well educated, they always back off from politics and aren't politically aware. For remaing uneducated poor nepalese people it is always easy for corrupt politicans to brian wash them, jaati ko naam liyera ladhaunee.

Aba yo political parties haru bata ta hamro biswaas nai uthhi suckyo...afaii affai society ko laghi kehi garnu parcha..hammi newa newa milera desh banaunu cha..Newa rajya magera haina..nepal bandha garera hoina...yesari ni subbai le affno affno society lai help garnu parcha..madeshi le affu thau ma pugera madesh lai banaunu parcha..yehi kathmandu ma ayera ani madesh lai birsine haina...Most political leader r busy in ktm...how to get kursi..farkera ni affno gau wah thau ma kasaile kehi gareko yaad chaina malai....

So we all newars have to be politically aware, 1stly all of the news media is owned by all corrput bahune baad ko political parties who only bring their own agenda. we need more of something like sajha where we can voice up..not like kantipur channel...political mouth piece of nepali congress and mysansar.com political mouth piece of  maobadhi...We also need to voice up and not stay silent.

and ya be rational...dun start asking for newa rajya...plain stupid...whole nepal is all u'rs....

Confused Soul i agree with you in many things.
Nepal has been manipulated by corrupt politicians, shahs and rana regime.
The elite ruling class of Nepal have never thought of Nepal except for their own benefits of their party
and their own kind(nepotism).
It's not only Newar that have lost newari scripts and bhasa. Even other janajatis have lost their many
culture and bhasa. It is mainly because due to Sanskritization which the high caste ruling class was trying to make Nepal into Asali Hindustan.
They had very narrow mind in how to bring Nepal forward. By instilling Indian priest at the Pashupathinath temple, varna(class) system in Nepal became worsen.

I learnt from one of the text that the fire at one of the office in Singha Durbar was intentional where variety of treaties and important scripts were collected and kept for safe keepings, later only to be consumed
by the fire. All this has to be accounted for and keep any individual responsible for.

But rest be assured that People's Party have begun and will continue to fight for the people.

I totally agree with you in this case, it is not only newars...but all people suffered.."It's not only Newar that have lost newari scripts and bhasa. Even other janajatis have lost their many culture and bhasa."

I still remember reading sanskrit when i was in school...when i had no chance to study my mother tongue..

you are yes, dead right on that singha durbar incident..it was done purposely..

But i have no political affiliation nor political aspiration..I just want people to be aware of history..How nepali people suffered..and i want them to be aware politically

Nepal Bhasa has undergone continuous change through time. The
language can be classified into old era and new era language. Although
there is no specific demarcation between the two, mid-Rana regime of
Nepal i.e. around 966 to 1061 N.S. is taken as the period of
demarcation between the two.

Modern Nepal Bhasa is the most Indianized of the Tibeto-Burman languages. It has had many centuries of contact with neighboring Indic languages.

Ancient era

The earliest known (dated) document in Nepal Bhasa is called "The Palmleaf from Uku Bahal" which dates back to 1114AD (235 NS) . A few lines from the script read

छीन ढाको तृसंघष परिभोग। छु पुलेंग कीत्य बिपार वस्त्र बिवु मिखा तिवु मदुगुन छु सात दुगुनव ल्है।

which is a general discussion of business transactions. This
document dates from Lichchhivi period. Hence, it can be inferred that
although the official language of the period was Sanskrit, Nepal Bhasa
was already in use.

Medieval era

The language continued growing in the Medieval period, and enjoyed royal patronage. Noted royal writers include Mahindra Malla,Siddhinarsingh Malla, Jagatprakash Malla etc. An example of the language used in that period is provided by lines of Mooldevshashidev written by Jagatprakash Malla

धु छेगुकि पाछाव वाहान
तिलहित बिया हिङ लाहाति थाय थायस

which is a description of Shiva, and the use of a tiger skin as a seat for Shiva.

The language replaced Sanskrit as the administrative language during this period.

Dark ages

The language faced a setback after the unification of Nepal in 17th
century, as the language of the hill people became the court language.

Furthermore, the literature and scripts of the language were put
into shadow during the 104 years of aristocratic "Rana rule" (1846-1950
AD). During this time, legal documents written in Nepal Bhasa were
declared unenforceable and any evidence in Nepal Bhasa was declared
null and void. There was no state support thereafter.

During the autocratic Panchayat rule of King Mahendra, which followed the coup d'êtat
that deposed the democratically elected bodies of Nepal, a new policy
of "Ek Bhasa, Ek Rashtra" (One language, one nation) was enforced. This
policy made Nepali language the only state language, and the other
languages were in shadow as "ethnic" or "local" languages. The
implementation of this policy made Nepali the state language. The
continued primacy of the language over 30 years made Khas or Nepali
language the lingua franca
as well. Oher languages, including Nepal Bhasa, were cast aside, as the
population could not use it for official, educational or legal purposes.

Renaissance era

The era between B.S.1965 to B.S. 1997 is considered as the renaissance era of Nepal Bhasa. During this era, people like Pandit Nisthananda Bajracharya, Siddhidas Mahaju, Jagatsundar Malla, Yogbir Singh Kansakar, Shukraraj Shastri, Dharmaditya Dharmacharya started writing, translating, educating, and restructuring the language.

The publication of a modern grammar, reader, and children's story books by Shukraraj Shastri, translation of the ancient epic Ramayan,
writing about the morals and ethics by Siddhidas Mahaju, "education in
mother tongue" movement by Jagatsundar Malla and other literary
activities in the era marked the renaissance. Also, research on the
language began in this period. It was proven that this language was a
Sino-Tibetan language and not Indo-Aryan language (as was believed) in
this era. Also, the renaissance marked the revival of the word "Nepal
Bhasa" to name the language rather than the Khas imposed term "Newari".

Some of the lines of Siddhidas Mahaju(N.S.987-N.S.1050) read as follows

सज्जन मनुष्या संगतनं मूर्ख नापं भिना वै
पलेला लपते ल वंसा म्वति थें ल सना वै

which state that even a moron can improve with the company of good
people just like even a drop of water appears like a pearl when it
descends upon the leaves of a lotus plant.

Modern Nepal Bhasa

A lot of writers and thinkers have contributed to the modern form of Nepal Bhasa. These include Chittadhar "Hridaya", Durga Lal Shrestha etc..

During the Panchayat era, under the slogan of "एक देश, एक भाषा नीति"
(one nation, one language), Nepal Bhasa (and other languages of Nepal)
was prevented from being broadcasted in Radio Nepal or other government
media. As the Government did not allow private broadcasting in Nepal,
this prevented the language from mass media. Also, the term Newari was
used to address the language instead of "Nepal Bhasa" which met fierce
criticism and resistance. This marked the beginning of Nepal Bhasa movement.
Instead of using mass media, people started producing audio cassettes.
Also, the first Nepal Bhasa movie "Silu" marked the beginning of movies
in Nepal Bhasa. Nepal Bhasa movement aimed to end the one nation, one
language policy. Some lines from the famous poet Durga Lal Shrestha of this era are as follows

घाः जुयाः जक ख्वइगु खः झी
स्याःगुलिं सः तइगु खः
झी मसीनि ! झी मसीनि !
धइगु चिं जक ब्वैगु खः

which translate as "We are crying because we are wounded, we are
shouting because of the pain, all in all we are demonstrating signs
that we are not dead yet".

The restoration of democracy marked the privatization of media.
Various concerned people and organizations are working on the
development of Nepal Bhasa by themselves. Nepal Bhasa has several
newspapers, a primary level curriculum, several schools, several F.M.
stations (selected time for Nepal Bhasa programs), regular TV programs
and News (in Image TV Channel), Nepal Bhasa Music Award (a part of
Image Award), several websites (including Nepal Bhasa wikipedia) etc.

Even after the restoration of democracy and the Loktantra
revolution, the state owned media address the language as Newari. Also,
after the Supreme court banned the use of Nepal Bhasa and any other
language of Nepal in any administrative activities, Nepal Bhasa
movement merged with other languages movements to fight for the right
of language.

Nepal Bhasa faced a decline during the Shah era when this language was
replaced by Khas Kura (later renamed Nepali) as the national language
and after the introduction of the "One nation, one language" policy of
King Mahendra. The then Royal Nepalese Government spent a lot for
Sanskrit education and a Sanskrit University was approved during those
times—although Sanskrit is virtually not spoken by anyone in
Nepal—because Khas Kura's roots lie in Sanskrit. There were very few
resources available then for even primary-level education in Nepal
Bhasa. There were no programs broadcast in Nepal Bhasa in the state
radio, Radio Nepal. Even after programs in Nepal Bhasa began to be
broadcast, the language was referred to as "Newari", a term considered
derogatory by Newars. Even today, there are no programs in Nepal Bhasa
in the state television, Nepal Television, although it broadcasts a
Bollywood Hindi movie every Saturday (although it is used as lingua
franca in Terai, Hindi is mother tongue of less than 1% population in
Nepal) and often Pakistani serials (in Urdu) as well. The Supreme Court
of Nepal has also banned any use of Nepal Bhasa even for trivial
matters in official purposes of any part of Nepal. These factors have
led to a resentment among Newar community and a feeling of "second
class" citizen in one's own state.

The maoist revolution was just a tool by the people to ride by to kick the monarchy and the elite ruling class of yesterday.
Now the real people movement have begun. So just keep your finger cross.
It be the people, the janajatis who be the Champion of the nation who will bring Nepal forward.

Jai Nepal.

Yes, I would like to thank maoist leader for getting rid of monarchy and elite ruling.. But besides that even maoist are political party, power hungry..without ethics..using tactics of intimidation..giving birth to YCl and now we have so many student henchmen groups like youth forum n all..They just don't have enough qualified ppl to run a party.

But the most, i really hate idea of asking for this rajya and that rajya...This will only lead to disintegration of our country...I am sure just like me there are lots of many nepalese people who have totally lost faith in the political system all together..

all those jan jatti leaders,,madesh leaders just want piece of pie...even by sake of dividing it...I don't know of any political leader who contributed to their own society.,,all r there only for kursi....none of them contributed to their own society...

I just want all people who are well educated all newars to contibute their own society..political parties are no good....all those @ssholes jaan jaati leaders shud rather focus their energy into upliftment of their own society then to ask for this rajyaa and that rajyaa

ma ta newar daju bhai lai affai kehi garuu bahnchu..and I ask same to other people also..from all ethnic backgrounds...

all the political parties have only bahune leaders of the worst kind...who have no ethics...atleast get some with ethics and naya bichaar dhara

if u ever wondered how all those maoist leaders got away from the judicary system is due to all tehi corrupt ppl who were pushed into judiciary sytem...

anywez maoist leader shud still be prosecuted for war crimes that they did commit...

Maoists are doomed.... they can never come back.. they are simply just a party run by bahun mentality like Prachanda and Baburam.. these are only firente people.. their roots are in inida.. not nepal.. so they do not love Nepal at all.. that's why they play simply games.. eerywhere they play games and spoil everything.... this is evident.
