Parliamentary committee objects to Indian claim over border encroachment

Kantipur Report

KATHMANDU, July 7 - The parliamentary team that had visited Dang district to inspect the encroachment of Nepali soil by the Indian side has objected to the statement made by the Indian official over the incident.

The team has also suggested the government to constitute a border security force and depute along the Nepal-India border.

Unveiling the report prepared by the International Relations and Human Rights Committee (IRHRC) under the Legislature-Parliament,  IRHRC Chairman Padam Lal Bishwokarma said the statement made by Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shanker Menon, who recently visited Nepal, was irresponsible and objectionable. "Labeling the border encroachment issue of Dang as rumour is condemnable and irresponsible," he said.

Menon in his Nepal visit some two weeks ago had denied of border encroachment from the Indian side.

The committee has concluded that encroachment and excesses from the Indian side is still unchecked in the bordering villages of Dang and Bara districts.

The 19-point suggestion presented by the committee includes constitution of a border security force and use of identity cards for cross-border movement, among others.

The parliamentary team was formed to study the encroachment of Nepali territories in Dang district by Indian side after incidents of excesses from the Indian SSB along the Nepal-India border.
