Rants and Raves

Greetings Sajha and this is the weekend edition of Rants and Raves.

Random Fit:

Don’t you just hate when people write ambiguous status updates on Facebook so that others would write comments on their wall? “Rajiv thinks enough is enough”, Neha is going for a big one. “Jason is on a rollercoaster ride.” Who the fu<k cares? So if you are one of those attention-seeking wh0res dying for sympathy comments through ambiguous status updates or profile picture updates of your hideous face rotated at various acute angles, here is a gift for you.-->(Gift Link

Holy Shit:

There was shocking news from the Cat Valley. After 50 years, the government has finally adopted plan B to clean up Bagmati and other holy rivers.  Plan A was crossing fingers and hoping eventually that the temple Gods would be sick of human garbage and spread a leprosy outbreak over Kathmandu, killing all those whose crap landed in Bagmati. Now what the government is planning to do may be great news to some of you folks but I am appalled. See when we dumped our garbage we were not defiling our holy rivers. Instead, we were sanctifying our shit with holy water.  Now our crap is no different from crap all over the world. If the government is planning to take our shit to a landfill, either they get a priest to pray over our sacred shit or we call for a Nepal Bandh.

No Junk in da Trunk:

Just as Microsoft decided to show its new OS, Windows 7, Apple released a new iMac with a strange mouse this week. It’s called the magic mouse and it has no buttons or a scroll wheel, or wires. Multi-touch functionality may be one thing but that mouse is ugly. You can’t have a sexy mouse without a decent hump to back it up. What guy wants to hold a flat mouse that won’t properly support his palm? Sorry Apple, that flat ass ain’t gonna cut it.

No Panties? No Problem:

In Sajha, the most exciting thread was why women in villages don’t wear panties. I observed the post from the beginning and after Kuhirey posted it, it took 11 replies before someone actually attempted to answer the question. The rest of you were outright offended by such a question and had to show your typical mob behavior. You would probably be offended if Kuhirey asked why nepali people eat with their hands, or why they dump their sh*t in the holy rivers (which I hope I have made clear). The thread has got more than 6800 views and I am surprised no one fu*king googled the answer.

First, women in the villages do wear underwear. They are called petticoats. They don’t wear panties. This is the history of underwear:

http://www.ehow.com/about_5094906_history-womens-underwear.html

To understand why they don’t wear panties, first look at what they are really wearing. Women in villages were saris (fariya/dhotis). In order to wear a sari, you need a petticoat to hold the sari in place.  Now if you wear panties underneath, it’s like you are wearing an underwear on top of another. Only city women and marvel superheroes have the money and the balls to pull that off.

Another reason why women might prefer petticoats to panties:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_did_women_wear_petticoats_and_dresses_long_ago

The layers from dhotis and petticoat give a better insulation during cold winters. Since we don’t have centralized heating in the village, the tradition has still continued.

Alright, if you want to share your opinions on what I've talked about or you’ve been flabbergasted from FF’s fit, leave your comments below. Have a great weekend!

Ff nice read keep em coming. Thanks for touching upon the underwear thread which gained a lot of unnecessary dirt along the way but I can't think of anything that won't. Even an honest question about which college to choose gets turned into a battlefield. Which leads me to formulate more generic questions about the nepali psyche but I will withold those from this thread.

I do have gripes about the ambiguous status in facebook as well. Either have courtesy to share what the hell you're talking about or don't bother us wit your semi encoded status.

Thanks to those who commented.
Yellow, sorry I do not have a blog. I don't intend to have one soon either. I thought about starting a blog sometime back, but really, notwithstanding the fact I will have a limited audience, I am too lazy to keep it going. In the meantime, I will stick with Sajha.

I logged into sajha after a long time, and it was good to see you writing again ff...

However, on the facebook status thing, do you really think people update their statuses just to seek attention? How about a post in sajha then? Wouldn't that be seeking attention? Where do we draw the line? At least status updates is targetted at friends. Here in sajha, a blogger is basically saying, OK World!!Listen to what i have to say.
I am sure, your intention is not to seek attention from sajha users but to express your thoughts, or even feelings(if i may). And, I think, facebook users you described above probably don't think about such things too when they update their status or profile pictures. I don't think its a good idea to simply analyze people's mind based on what we think. People may think differently, probably less cynical.
Just my thought...

About ambiguity of the statuses, many a times, people post statuses targetting a specific group of their friends to whom the status is not as ambiguous, may be even an inside joke. Unfortunately, facebook doesn't have a way ( at least to my knowledge ) to only have certain group of people view certain statuses.

I, too, am not keen in seeing status updates of all the people in my facebook. Facebook, therefore, has a hide button. One click of it, and you will forever, be free of the status updates :)

It was good to see you come back and write again though. Keep writing.
