This question is hunting me. We are from different background and ethnic. Every Ethnic has their own culture and heritage. Well! if you want to define Nepalese culture, food how do you do that? what kind of food do you say is Nepali and what type of house in typically Nepali? Since i have seen lot of ethnic fight over here, just wanted to make sure how as a whole Nepalese do you define yourself.

Truth simply is.. why you 2ant to make it complicated... you are nepalese.. because you were born Nepali..

The way you are asking you.. why the leaves of the tree are green? No matter what reasonings you give to answer that question.. still you are not sure if that's the reason for the leaves to be green. There's no answer.. Truth simply is.. it's that simple...

Being born in Nepal is one thing I give it to you. Ok when you are asked about Nepali culture or food, do you explain your ethnic culture and food? how do you do that? Since there are many pundits over here who are experts in their own field, so simply i am Nepalese this is my culture this is my food and this is my dress etc.... well! just want to fill something instead of this

Did you forget what you learned about the ethnic and cultural diversity of Nepal??

Or didn't you go to school at all?

Anybody who comes from any one the 14 zones (75 districts) of Nepal are Nepalese people.
It doesn't matter if you can speak "Nepali" fluently, or understand it.
Nepal as a country- is a fusion of all those ethnic, cultural, lingual and religious diversities.
Sadly, people want to separate and establish their own states based on these very identities.
Such a division only strengthens the differences, and similarities fall into shadow.
How can we be stronger and prosperous when we are divided? We will not.

Look at all the developed countries. Their people come from so many countries and follow so many traditions, cultures. Yet, when it comes to national unity, they are aware and capable to realizing the importance of what they have in common instead of what they have different.

Look at America itself. The Confederate South wanted to divide America because they wanted to keep black slaves. But when they lost, the slaves were free. It's citizens were granted equal rights and opportunities regardless of their color, race, sex, national origin etc. America's citizens come from almost every other country in the world. Yet, they understand what they have in common.

In contrast, stupid, vision-less Nepali leaders are taking advantage of illiteracy and ignorance of Nepalese people. They don't want the Nepalese to understand the facts that prosperity lies in unity. Because of people unite, they cannot lead a mob, get into power.

Nepalese people need to understand that-
all of them want-
1. to lead a good life.
2. access to better health, security and job opportunities.
3. good education for their children.
4. prosperous future of their children.

Now if you have all these common goals for life, how stupid it is to think you will get them by creating ethnic, lingual, religious, boundaries and promoting differences.

The better way to achieve these goals for all instead is by eliminating these boundaries, promoting belongingness and creating a homogeneous society. It might take some time to create a "perfect" society, there are no perfect societies in the world; but we can always create a better society. In contrast, we will never be able to create a better society by building walls between ourselves.

If you cannot find a way to live together and work together within this small country, how will you be able to live in harmony with the rest of world by creating your lingual, ethnic state? The only thing you will get form such division is struggle of power with such groups.

God bless!

Dear Mr. a-helicase,

With regards and respect to what you are saying I am not talking about ethnic division or US. I don't have anything to do with what you have mentioned above, please stop trying to promote your propaganda. My simple question how do you introduce you are Nepalese. There are many ethnic is Nepal which i don't know anything about now when i start explaining Nepalese culture if i did my own ethnic's culture it is misleading to the people who wants to know about nepal.... because growing up in Nepal and meeting people of Nepal in foreign country has made me think what i thought was Nepali culture is simply my culture. because the way people eat, dress, celebrate festival/ wedding is totally different from others. So where do I stand as a Nepalese.. That is my question. About education well! if you have a double degree and you have an attitude problem, your education and the degree will surely be better in the dustbin. Sorry about my language but i asked a question and haven't found it one yet

IT good question, this is very important n genuine issues u hav raised here that we need to ponder hard. what actually is nepalese nationalism, symbols n cultural heritages?? i hav been always asking same questions to everyone. the current definition in reference to national policy and system is very vague, incomplete, unfair n misleading in nature. but it is being improved gradually as inclusive, i can feel that.

It's a difficult thing to define being a any -ese. Few countries have a population homogeneous enough to allow that kind of unique specification. What makes one an american or an Indian? The mixture or aggregate of all kinds of cultures and traditions that exist within communities living in our country forms nepalese culture. Why do you need a single specific food, game or house type to identify nepal? Typical nepali food in the highlands, in the valley, in the terai and so on, there are variations.. It's normal to have regional variations.

IT, the question "how do we define nepalese culture?" is very tough to answer as it usually turns out to be "my culture" whoever attempts to put specific answerto this question rather than "nepalese culture".

Back in home, during my first few months of schools in Kathmandu valley (mid 80s), I met many people who could not communicate with me in Khas-nepali language - the only language I learnt in my childhood. The "nepalese culture" I saw there was quite different culture than the "nepalese culture" I saw before coming into the valley.

Fast forwarding to my first two years of college (around 90s), a friend from Bardiya told one day - "If possible, I want to burn all the history book I read and all the knowledge of history of Nepal." All of us were surprised first, and thought probably he was anti-national element (arastriya tatwo) that the radio of the time used to iterate day and night. We asked cautiously - why? - "The history is only about Kathmandu Valley, Gorkha and few of its neighbors. Where is my Bardiya in the entire history? I don't feel this history is worth to read for me." Since then, I started to think of diversity and the jeal of self-recognition of the excluded people which did not come out but were somewhere burried heavily under the domination of unitary system.

Fast forwarding to my life in foreign country as a student (late 90s), I had to join a home-stay program with a family at a remote village, who chose to host nepalese student. The host family prepared vegetarian cuisine for me, and surprised me with a lot of questions about Nepal that I never knew. The reason was they had hosted a nepalese student the year before, who happened to be a strict vegetarian guy from eastern Terai who changed DHOTI everytime before his meal. That family had run into trouble to feed him because finding edible vegetable was hard in that village. The vegetarian guy probably tried to show them the "Nepalese culture" of changing DHOTI before meal. This year they were better prepared to host a nepalese without considering that Nepalese people might have quite contradicting culture. Whatever they learnt about nepalese culture from the guy was not in my knowledge. This put all of us into confusion. After learning briefly about their past experience, I tried to explain about the diversity in Nepal, different religion, different ethnicity, etc. When I told them we have more than 60 spoken language, they did not believe me. They asked - "is it different language or different dialect?"  "No, no it is not different dialect, it is different language, completely different sets of vocabulary, different grammar, and different accent." They immidiately asked - "how big is Nepal?" "Well it is small, but we have diversity." They asked - "Then, how do you survive? Don't you have problem to communicate? Don't you have wars?" - "No we have no problem because most nepalese can speak more than one language, and they know how to find the way to communicate even if they don't know the language." I tried my best to give more general version of Nepalese culture but I knew I was far from perfect or near-perfect explanation as I also might have talked more of my culture than real Nepalese culture. I started to realize then that nepalese people started to try exposing their own culture beyond the boundaries of "daura suruwal kot topi", "ek bhasa ek bhesh, ek raja ek desh", whenever they got the opportunity.

Fast forwarding to recent days - where the issue of nepalese culture and diversity is almost at the central of all political agenda and ongoing conflicts. The hot issues and debates on federal restructuring is basically focussed on how to recognize the diversity. The problem and solution approach restructuring new Nepal is based on addressing the concerns brought up by the diversity. Recently, Tamangs, Kirats, Magars and Newars had decided to unilateral declaration of autonomous regions and cash out the uniqueness of their cultural existence for claiming political right. Those groups, who feel they have unique culture to show and preserve, want to have autonomy, but those, who don't feel they have significant culture, want to envelope everything within a common term of "nepalese culture".

So, I believe, there is not a clear answer of the question IT has put here. We need to wait some time until the dust of federal resturing settles down before getting somewhat clear picture at the earliest.

No culture, or religion or house you live make you Nepali. It may sound acrimonious but you are a Nepali because you were born in the Political Boundary Nepal. Your identity of being Nepali also your inability to think and live like any other culture elsewhere in the globe.
