My OPT expires on April and I am planning to go back to school from fall. Does anyone know what will happen to my status for that period (May-Aug)?

Any information is appreciated.

Thank you

First of all, the time between the OPT end data and start of
your new program should not be more than 5 months. In this case you look fine.

You should be accepted for new study program either in the
same college or different college before the end of 60 days grace period
following OPT end date.

If you are going to new college, after getting acceptance
letter from your new school, you should apply for F1 release with your chosen
release date in your current college no later than end of 60 days grace period.
The release date must be no earlier than 5 months from new study start date.

Your current school then updates ur SEVIS record on the chosen release date and
your new school will then provide I-20 to you.

.

If you are planning to study on same college, you should first
be accepted for study  and apply for new
I-20 before the end of grace period.

You will be in legal status if above mentioned things went
timely.

See ur I-20 the end date for OPT , if u say ur OPT ends on April  30 then u r out of status on May 1.
before that u need to have a new I-20. and sevies must be transfer

Jhyamma my international advisor also mentioned the same thing...but the only confusion is I already used my 60 days grace period as I graduated in Feb and started my OPT in April. So will I get another 60 days grace period after expiration of my OPT?

Thanks

The 60 day grace period following OPT end date does not care the 60 day grace period after graduation.  So even if your OPT started after 60 days from graduation, you will have 60 days grace period after OPT final date.

By the way u planning to go to other school or same school? Better try to get new I-20 within that grace period. If you get new I-20 before OPT end date, you should stop working right away.

Just make sure you do not get I-20 before 5
months from your new college start date.
