This 1042 is reported to non-residence who was compensated in any form equivalent to the stated amount. This means you have to file 1040 NR ( not 1040 NR EZ).
Give a visit to nearest tax office, I will recommend H & R Block who does NR tax filing ( most do not do in their office, it will take a while to know the result), ask them if they do NR.
Most of the time if your scholarship grant is gone to pay the tuition, may offset directly and your reported income will be lowered? Not sure, but in 1040 filer I am suggesting and right way to do. If they can do it , that will give you some refund.
Most 1040 NR filer ( single ) uses 1040 NR EZ and no one had has suggested to have itemized deduction which is more than the deduction allowed to 1040 NR.
You were right , your tuition, state withheld , mandatory fees not health , books and stationery and computer ( I guess for all).
This what I heard from ex filer and getting more refund than straight EZ filing
