The former king of Nepal, Gyanendra, has said that he hopes the country's centuries-old Hindu monarchy may one day be restored.

Gyanendra - who was deposed in 2008 when the monarchy was abolished - said that he did not believe it had ended.

He was ousted after Nepal's Maoists, who had fought a decade-long civil war for a republic, won elections in 2008.

The BBC's Joanna Jolly in Nepal says that the former king's views are unlikely to be taken seriously.

Our correspondent says that while there has been speculation that he may make a comeback, most mainstream political leaders reacted by dismissing his claims as irrelevant.

'Ups and downs'

"I don't believe that the monarchy has ended," the former king said in a rare interview late on Wednesday on Nepal's Avenues Television.

"History shows that the monarchy has had its ups and downs... But I will do whatever the people want me do."

Gyanendra came to the throne in 2001 after his nephew - the then crown prince Dipendra - gunned down most of the royal family before shooting himself.

Gyanendra's brother, King Birendra, was killed as was his sister-in-law, Queen Aishwarya.

Gyanendra's popularity plummeted when he sacked the government and took control of the country in 2005. He argued that the mainstream parties had failed to tackle the Maoist insurgency.

But his takeover backfired when mass protests forced the reinstatement of parliament.

The Maoists went on to win subsequent elections and Nepal was declared a republic, ending 240 years of monarchy, in May 2008.

The former king - who admitted in his interview that his power grab had been a mistake - has kept a low profile since he was ousted.

"I left [the throne] without objections so that this country would see peace and prosperity. My forefathers united this country and I hope that unity will not broken," Gyanendra said.

He was speaking as Nepal's lawmakers continue with their struggle to draft a new constitution, which correspondents say is unlikely to be completed by a 28 May deadline.

I am not pro-king but the people should have given a choice to choose or loose because it was too early to do many things at a time. His fate should be in the hand of Nepali. Nepali Army was united under king and loyal to country as they did to king.
Maoist wanted to infiltrate army putting  his cadets and take over the power. Many of us read about the army general Rukmad Katwal, but he saved the army as a national guard but not a puppet of any party. I do not know how many of you believe it, he saved the army from Maoist infiltration.

Once gone, I think it is hard to be in, other than Indian will take part in restating his power. But I do not see that will be going to happen.

If king wants to stay as ceremonial and out of power than whats wrong about that?

Nepalese politician will get one less reason to fight (for the post of president) and now I don't think there are any qualifying man for such big post !!!

I agree with tamanglakola: Nepal army is in some way loyal to the King. Gynanedra avoided bloodshed by returning the power to its people on Bhadra 19th.

If he wanted to use the force, RNA (at the time) could kill many in thousand. I wish he could have used army and Makune, Prachande, Girija, Gachhadar, Sujata, etc. all got killed at that time.

All these idiots pushed the country a century backward.

just take a sneak preview on this site /GulfTimes.com-{Latest Update: Thursday23/9/2004September, 2004, 11:21 AM Doha Time}  mends on this matters:

Thousands march in Nepal against king

KATHMANDU: About 15,000 people marched in the Nepali capital on Tuesday to call for the restoration of a dissolved parliament and the formation of an all-party government in the biggest protest in the city for several months.
Four political parties represented in a parliament dissolved by King Gyanendra in 2002 have vowed to press ahead with their protest campaign, after it was briefly suspended for the beginning of the rainy season.
“The government is a pawn in the hands of the king,” said Ghanashyam Poudel, a member of the United People’s Front, one of the four parties behind the protest.
King Gyanendra fired Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba two years ago but reappointed him in June after sustained, often violent, protests by main political parties which said the constitutional monarch had grabbed power.
The four parties behind Tuesday’s protest have not accepted Deuba’s reappointment, saying it was unconstitutional.
Riot police put up barbed wire barricades to stop the protesters from marching on the king’s palace, as they paraded through Kathmandu carrying red and white party flags.
“No to active monarchy,” read one placard carried by protesters. Some of them shouted: “We want democracy and peace.”
Deuba was fired in 2002 for failing to control an insurgency by Maoist rebels, who have been fighting since 1996 to overthrow the monarchy and replace it with a communist state.
In the latest violence, the army said 13 rebels were killed in several clashes on Monday and Tuesday in various parts of the mountainous country ....

To the bitterness and burn-hand experience, does Nepal will rewrite history again nothings but rebel and anarchy instead of nation dev. progress..?.    hopefuly not....
