Who is the hero of Maine Pyaar Kiya ?
Salman Khan
Who is hero of DDLJ ?
Shahrukh

Who is actor of First Nepali Cinema 'Aama' made on Nepali soil ?
Which is first Nepali Color Movie ?

We know all about bollywood movies, even acronyms are enough for us, but never try to even read about nepali movies or the industry itself.  WHY ?

Maybe if we knew its history or its current state, we may start loving our own movie industry. Here is some interesting links to HISTORY of Nepali Cinema.

or

READ ALL PARTS from Part 1 - 4. The above links will take you to just final part with other other parts links on the begining of the article.

Liked it, the history itself seems like some movie itself.

Babuyadav,

Thank you for posting the links. I think they are very interesting.

But one thing that I would like to see written about is Tele-vision sitcoms. Nepal may lack in terms of cinema, but many television sitcoms have been quite successfully produced. And in that way, I would say that television sitcoms have become a powerful form of social commentary in Nepal. In many ways, going to the 'big hall' is a very formal event. It costs a lot of money. But many Nepalese reguarly consume TV from the comfort of their homes.

Making big cinema is expensive to make as well as show. But I think that between TV and the internet, there is a lot of scope for Nepalese promoting our culture. What do you think?

Homeyji,

Sitcoms or even serials in olden days were made with good script and better performance. Today most sitcoms that is being aired by major Nepali channels are slapsticks and cheap humor made with almost ZERO SENSIBILITY.

I remember, how whole 'chowk' used to gather up to watch Santosh Panta's 'Hijo Aaja Ka Kura' or even serials like 'Chakrabew', 'Tadha Ko Basti', 'Rupmati', 'Bhir Dekhi Bhir Saama', 'Gulaf Ekai Plata Fulcha', etc.  Serials made upon good literature were well made.

Today dominance of major international channels have just eroded Nepali Soaps, makers simply copy from Indian serials, adapt it into nepali society.
Sitcoms are the worst ones, TOO MUCH HAMMING, you wont be able tolerate their exaggerated expressions, their below the belt lines, LOUD ACTING makes you skip channel to watch MALLIKA SHERAWAT dances instead.

So as far as I know barring few social dramas like  DEVI, MAHA's most serials, there are hardly any sitcoms that could be praised.

Babuyadav,

You bring up a very good point. I have been talking about this thing with friends for a while. You talk about the variety of television programming that has been pushed into Nepali society. You are so right. There is so much that it is over-whelming. I wonder to what degree Nepali society has changed because of this?

In many ways, I feel that the reason that Nepali society is changing so rapidly is because of the variety of media.

Historically, the Rana's controlled the amount of exposure that the common people had. The bad side to this was obviously that Nepalese did not have access to the kind of information and knowledge that benefitted them. Then obviously in the 1950's that slowly opened up.

But it seems that today, we have almost gone to the other extreme. Definitely education-wise, Nepal and Nepalese have access to all kinds of media and information. But I don't think that is only a positive thing. I feel there is a negative side to this also. We have more quantity of information but, Babuyadav, as you pointed out, the quality has gone down.

What do you think?

If a child has over-exposure to too many cultures at the same time, he gets confused and loses his identity. This child has many problems with his identity and personality when he grows up. This is what ABCDs: American born confused desi's suffer from. In Nepal we call these people: BABAL Khate's. Bagmati Anchal Born America Living Khates.

Is there such a thing as over-exposure for a society? Is Nepali-culture suffering from over-exposure because of too much media being imported into our country and society?

Well i have followed Each and every Nepali movie very nicely and it's good to see things are changing in Nepali Film Industry finally they have entered in HD DVD Authoring era . But sad thing still they lack in Authoring DVD's properly where colours are messed up /field blending/frames are messed  up.

First of all They need Some Good Cameras for recording if they really want to make make good HD DVD's to sell in market .
Second Whoever is authoring these DVD's needs to get proper Lesson about encoding/authoring DVD's so they will learn how to manage to make better DVD's .
Third They need to learn difference between DVD9's and DVD5's . Proper DVD is DVD9 which is over 6GB but i saw some So called DVD's which were around 4GB .

Lately there are too many movies being released and most of them are copied from Korean movies Like Mero Euta Saathi cha - which is totally a copy of A Millionaire's First Love 2006 .

Nepali people are more interested in Desi movies cause they are so nicely presented even if it's a remake of some english movie . All it matters is presentation in movie sector and our Nepali actors acting is like some kids play in junior school .

I read the above posts and the words that scream loudly is: quality, quality, quality.

Maybe we first need to come up with quality writing of Nepali stories...and gradually these will turn into good quality movies. I think that this is the most important thing. Once this is solid then we can work on the technical aspects and the acting. But without solid Nepali stories it is hard to go anywhere.

In recent times, I do have seen some good script turned into commercially viable cinema.

For e.g. if you get a chance to watch DASDHUNGA, dont miss it. Be it in cinema or DVD.
The movie is based upon Madan Bhandari's mysterious fatal accident.
Writer has so nicely pointed out various conspiracy theories regarding the incident.
loosely based upon Jim Carry's '23', the movie is once thrilling  experience with some good performance.

Also we need to cut some slack to nepali cinema.
Just because we are exposed to all kind of multi-million dollar cinemas we can be over judgemental towards couple million ruppees cinema. It doesn't seem logical for us.
Unless we appreciate even a small good work in Nepali cinema and start watching at least some of them, it will be hard for the industry to even sustain.

Luckily it seems both makers and audience have grown up. It doesn't matter if the director copies some bollywood, hollywood or korean movies. But the movie should be good and more importantly he/she should turn it into much better product with some due credits.
Nepali makers will never be able to pay royalties to international makers, so at least they could give credits to original makers instead of placing their names under STORY/SCRIPT.

@ babuyadav : Well it's not about copying issue only . There's not a problem in copying it's about scripting and acting skills . People today want something new something different .

Lately we have seen lot of changes in Nepali movie industry but it's not enough they need to show some creativity we dont want people laughing over actings of actors while watching. Every movies have flaws and small errors it's not big deal but in our Nepali movies acting skills is the main issue .
