NO specific suggestion on tht,
but go for japenese car!
If you can drive manual shift, that would be more reliable and less costly.

From my own experience, first time buyer may go with the looks , as well need to consider the driver, neighborhood he or she lives ( in case privet seller ) , how often maintained, any leaks any noise , many things has to be considered. Low mileage car cost high and high mileage car cost less, if has not maintained well no one should buy it. . Because as you are new driver, mechanic may butch you head to toe.
Students are graduating soon and may be a good time to buy. I check craigslist and but if you see too 2006 japanese car for 3000 and they will email you saying , car has to deliver, delete them.
While you buy through Craigslist be careful where you going to see a car , Never carry money with you, ask to bring a safe location and better to bring a friend who had been driving ( two is better than one, I was intimidated and bought a car, did not like it and had some issues, told me O2 sensor and believe him. It has knock sensor and EVAP, cost me over 150 just to pin point it). Never believe on what they say, you can drive to a AutoZone store and request for scan which they provide free service. Better to take to a mechanic for check up, they will charge you about an hour charge and let you know about the car.
On that price range you will find a 2004-2007 Japanese car. A friend of mine bought Camry LE with 87K 2005 for 6500 but it was a privet sale from an international student.
