"Ever cried for your country?"

Nepalese complain about the caste system and corrupt officers. They openly vent their anger against the government. But have they ever thought About Nepal's real problems? I believe that they have not. I want to say that Nepal's real problems are lack of patriotism among the people and lack of love for one another. This is the conclusion I have reached during my stay in Nepal. This summer, I did voluntary work from July 5 to July 30 at FHI Ever Vision School, Matatirtha, Kathmandu.

Let me first tell you about my country, Korea. This might help you understand my point. Just after the Korean War, which claimed lives of more than 5 million Koreans, Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Without natural resources, Korea had no choice but to desperately struggle for its survival by all means. Under this gloomy situation, Koreans envied other Asian countries like Japan, Taiwan, and Nepal. Korean government officials were horribly corrupt. With the dual classes of Yangban (nobles) and Sangnom(peasants), Korean society was sickening day by day. However, Koreans, having determination to become rich, overcame the unfair social structure and put the country onto the track of development. When the former president Park Jung Hee took over the government, there were few factories in Korea. Korea could not attract loans or expect foreign investments. Under these circumstances, President Park 'exported' miners and nurses to then West Germany. The salaries that they earned were used to building factories and promoting industrialization of Korea. In 1964, when President Park visited then West Germany, the miners and nurses asked the president when the Koreans would become rich. The president replied, crying with the miners and nurses, that someday the Koreans would become rich.

Many of Korean scientists and engineers, who could just enjoy comfortable lives in the United States, returned to Korea with only one thing in their mind: the determination to make Korea the most powerful and prosperous country in the world. They did their best even though their salaries were much less than what they would have received in other countries. The Koreans believed that they have the ability to change their desperate situation and that they must make the country better, not only for themselves but also for the future generations yet to come. My parents' generation sacrificed themselves for their families and the country. They worked 14 hours a day, and risked their lives working under inhumane conditions. The mothers, who went to work in factories, fed their babies while operating machines in dangerous environments. They always tried to teach their children the true value of 'hard work'. Finally, all of these hard works and sacrifices made the prosperous Korea that you see now. Nepalese! Have you ever cried for your country? I heard that many of Nepali youth do not love their Nepal. I also heard that they want to leave Nepal because they don't like caste system, or because they want to escape the severe poverty. However, they should be the first ones to voluntarily work for Nepal's development, not the first ones to complain and speak against their country.

I have a dream that someday I would be able to free the souls from suffering from the underdeveloped countries, anachronistic customs and the desperate hunger. My belief has become stronger than ever after seeing the reality in Nepal.

A child with a fatal disease who doesn't have enough money to buy a pill; a child living in what seems like a pre-historic dwelling and not having the opportunity to receive education; and a student who cannot succeed, no matter how hard he studies, just because of the class he comes from. A society, in which wives not only take care of children but also work in the fields, while their husbands waste their time doing nothing; a society in which a five-year-old must labour in a brick factory to feed herself. Looking at the reality of Nepal, I was despaired, yet this sense of despair strengthened my belief. I already know that many of the Nepalese are devout Hindus. However, nothing happens if you just pray to hundreds of thousands of gods while doing nothing. It is the action that you and Nepal need for the better future. For Nepal and yourselves, you have to show your love to your neighbours and country just as you do to Gods. You know that your Gods will be pleased when you work for the development of your country and improvement of your lives. Therefore, please, love your neighbours and country. Teach your children to love their country. And love the working itself. Who do you think will cry for your Nepal? Who do you think will be able to respect the spirit of Himalayas and to keep the lonely flag representing it? You are the ones responsible for leading this beautiful country to a much brighter future. This responsibility lies on you.

(The writer is a 15 year-old student of Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies, South Korea).

I'm not going to argue with THIS 15 year old but please convey this message to his/her parents IN SOUTH KOREA.

Yes, Nepalese people are poor. Poor and Rich is nothing but just the comparison of what you have and what you don't.

And WE, NEPALESE, NEVER  CHANGE OUR RELIGION OR BELIEVES JUST TO BE RICH LIKE OTHERS IN THIS WORLD.

Remember, 90 % of South Koreans in US are christians. Most South Korean parents they change their Religion so they can have better life for their families and they get offer to come to the US through the church mission.  And this is on going since 1950s.  And US army base camp in South Korea. No wonder, US provides millions of dollar to South Korea.

And WE, Nepalese, BELIEVE IN OURSELVES THAT WE CAN STAND ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD IF WE HAVE A PROPER EDUCATION AND WILLING TO DO HARD WORK.

WE LOVE OUR COUNTRY AND WE LOVE OUR PEOPLE. AND WE'RE DOING WHATEVER WE CAN ONE STEP AT A TIME.

GOD BLESS NEPAL.

Its funny how he forgets to mention how much USA helped S Korea to develop. Every country goes through a phase, It has to completely break to build and I strongly believe that one day Nepal will be a great country. During those hard times of S Korea the same story would have been told by any American exchange student studying there, like this korean ignorant writes about NEPAL now that they are developed he has bragging rights. His generation missed out the hard times and now he claims to have  the right to judge us and to question if we love our country or not? kasto tori lahure raichha he should ask his grand parents if they hated the state of their country back then BUT LOVED  KOREA anyways. Many Nepalese will return to Nepal at least my generation will return to retire in Nepal and will contribute to new ideas and to the total economy of our country, Korea didnt become rich in one day, it took time for Koreans to earn money and return so it will take time for all the Nepalese sons and daughters to return, Mother Nepal has contributed and invested  her children to foreign countries and one day soon most will return. Then someone is going to find this guy and make him eat his JUDGEMENTAL BULLCRRRAAP.

Reality is not exciting but boring and old: Yes it is and will be forever.  What has been change since you read or discussed last time?
I think it is an ever ending issue and some people are more concerned and some not.  In that case, should not be brought again.  You read the finance minister fired the Secretary (it may be April fool story but if he goes and have better one, should be happy), it is a matter of concern?

Thanks guys for your comments. Yes, american investment played a key role in  hiking up korean developement. But, simultaneously, another bitter truth is most of nepalese lack nationality. I have heard many highly educated Nepalese people advocating annexation of Nepal by India. What a fugitivism !!! Recently a Nipponese uttered Nepalese do not have discipline and lack love towards other nepalese. It's true.

Jai Nepal

For [Disallowed String for - bad word]k's sake. Do you not see how you guys are undermining your own arguments and actually proving her point by trying to contradict her with your ridicilously indifferent nonsenses. You are trying to say that Koreans would still be the same if they weren't aided by US? You think these people who used to work 10-12 hours a day saved their money for years and opened stores in 5th avenues and Times squares were actually funded by Americans? What Nepali in US has done that? When was the last [Disallowed String for - bad word]ingg time we actually said "Hey you are right" to someone. Jaile nana thari kekekeke bakk bakk garyo. Kalle ke bhanyo, esle yo bhanyo. That's why we are digiing all the way down from the rock bottom that we are so irreparably in. Don't you see how ungrateful we are to be born in a beautiful and free country? She has a point. That's the gist of the story. She wanted to say something from her honest self, she's 15. Kura sunnu kaa kaa. Uskai khutta tanna patti agi sareko cha. Kaam chaina timiharu. Tyo bhoteharu America auney bittikai ma Chinese ho, Ma Tibetan ho bhanna thalchan. Bhako Aryan haru aa-aafno khutta taandai, kun chai keti le bihey agadi o sanga sutyo, kun chai dhotiniko kattttu dekhyo baarey lekhdai thikka cha.

So what was so patriotic about Koreans sending remmitance home? We are probably sending more remmitance home than Koreans right now. Does that make us more Patriotic than Koreans?

I do not think our poverty has anything to do with our Patriotism.

@ Sidster

Lets put S.Korea aside. What is the key factor you think that contributed in the developement of Japan? American investment??? No way !!! It's their love and integrity towards their nation that helped establish WW II torn Japan one of the richest and most developed country in the world.

Japan was a powerful country before the world war. After USA destryoed Japan, it helped rebuilding it to this modern stage. Every country US has destroyed...they built it back. Japan, Germany, Korea, and now Iraq and Afganistan underway. Once they establish full order in Iraq and Afganistan they will rebuild those nations too. None of those country men were patriotic. They all sold out or lost to the higher power.

Development of Japan is due to the hardwork, honesty, and dedication of Japanese people. You add American blessing on the top of that you get all the prosperity you are seeing in Japan right now. If Japanese were patriotic they would reject everything US has done to them.

If India drops two Nukes in our cities and kills 2 million of us and then later rebuilds Nepal...we would still hate India for what it has done to us. If Japanese were patriotic they would be hating USA right now.

Syanjali,

Correct me if i misunderstood/ misinterpreted as you wrote" राडी फटाएर पढ्नु पर्छ"....

I am pretty much sure that means "banging whores while studying!" On what context was the remark made is my question!

It never seems to amaze me on how our pockets never seem to be filled with a sense of humility - but full of defensiveness, scorn, vanity and unnecessary criticism. Being open to views that are different from ours, yet possibly better, can only help improve our situation, right? Forget about this thread and think for a moment on what it means to us as a nepali - what positive contributions have we made, does being rich imply only monetary values or are they something else, are we happy with our current surroundings, do we value and practice honesty, etc. Our defense of nepal can only be characterized by our actions - otherwise, the value of it or what we say is nil.

There is a clear message of the writer in the memo: it is possible - and that is ALL we need to take from it. The economics of South Korea's rise is not difficult to understand but hardly easy to implement. Difficulty of implementation comes from our unwillingness to change our thought process, our uninviting attitudes, our lack of unity and our low form of character and personality.

We must first all learn how to be a good human being, validated by our peers and the community, before we vomit utterances - that is all.

This memo, however, is an old story: http://sajha.com/sajha/html/OpenThread.cfm?ThreadID=24298
