i'm finding sajha quite helpful! one more help needed:

any MD/PhDs out there?
i'm thinking about doing MD/PhD and would like to know people's experiences.
i'm a senior in Molecular Biology with Microbiology as minor. I will be done with school by April 2012 but I'm thinking about spending one more year to do some more research, MCAT prep, and to take a few classes to complete medschool requirements. i like doing resarch quite a lot and I'm working in cancer research lab. I will continue to do research but I also want to take care of patients which will allow me to understand the disease better and hence make me a better researcher.

but the problems are :
1. hard to get into the program (supercompetitive)
2. takes long time (7-8 years to finish the program and additional years for residency and/or post doc)

i can pretty much take care of the first problem. but i'm concerned about the second one, that's a long time in school. on the contrary, if I do just PhD, i'll be done in 5 years or so. but PhD is not what I want to do exactly. I'm in dilemma.

If there are any current MD/PhD students or people who already have their MD/PhD, please share your experiences and suggest me if MD/PhD is worth the time.

@eternalsunshine: just basic things, experience overall. I've heard a lot of people complaining about the time they have to devote to school. People say that MD/PhDs don't have a life, they suck at both MD and PhD and so on. I'm just trying to know how it really is. Is it as bad as people complain?
Also, if you have time, please read the article samaebaji posted above. Is it really like that?

@samaebaji: I read the article and it was scary but not scary enough to divert my mind from science. As an undergrad, I have already faced some challenges the writer faced and I haven't given up and I'm not going to give up. Scientists, from what I understand and experience, face more failures than success. When I work in lab, the chances of getting things done correctly is something like 1 out of 10 because I'm trying to do something that no one has done before. And this applies to all scientists. A person who doesn't know how to fail will never become a good scientist and the person who wrote the article is one of those who is afraid of failing.
And it's not certain that everyone will have a bad like him/her. It depends on how well a person can handle his life.
Thanks for sharing the link, it was fun reading it.

reminded me of my first year. i had to take antidepressive drug. but the point is what do you want. can you assure me that if you get a MBA degree (i think it is lucurative) and have a prosperous life. chances are 50-50. same is here broda.
i am liking it now, though i have episodes of depression. its normal. nepal ko news pade pachi pani ta tyhai huncha ni. aama baba lai samjada pani tyhai huncha. yestai ho life vanyo ani lab gayo kam garyo 2 kshak bhat khayo ani padyo sutyo.
ani furture ko bare socheko chaina vanera kassile sodyo vane i am working on it vanchu.  department ma sabai le mero science lai manparauchan, kasaile ta best student pani vanchan- ani ghar janchu tyo din chiane beer khanchu. budile mito masu bhutera dinche. ani bholi pani yestai ramro kam garchu vanne athot garchu ani bhat khayera sutchu. bholi kam bigrincha ani dikka lagcha ani sajha pardchu, kasai lai gali garchu karai lai arti dinchu. ghar janchu bnat khanchu sutchu.
kuro k vane ma haresh khadina huna ta chares pani khadina, ani man ma ramro garchu vanne ko ramri huncha vanne aasha garchu ani tyo raat feri bhat khanchu ani sutchu
at the end what i want to say is its difficult not impossible. future dark chaina (padelekeko manche ko future kahile dark hudaina)

Dr Kanchho, i like your optimism. Could you lend me  some?

With all your cancer research background you can get into a high powered clinical oncology fellowship. I think your future to me sounds like an avid basic science researcher and a master clinician.  For oncology I would suggest you to aim for the top or not worth your time spent with the MD/PhD program: Mayos, Hopkins, Mass General, Columbia, MD Anderson, Sloan K etc. I do not mean to scare you but lets count the number of boards you will be taking hereafter:

MCAT
USMLE Step 1
USMLE Step 2 CK
USMLE Step 2 CS
USMLE Step 3
In training examintations (ITE) during your residency period
ABIM (after your residency and this is for Internal Medicine)
Heme/Oncology subspeciality board (after your Oncology fellowship)
Recertification for ABIM and Hem/Oncology every 10 years

Quitters don't win and winners don't quit!!

MD/PhD rocks. You will become a different breed. So go for it man!!

@eternalsunshine: thanks for the suggestion bro! that tells me what to expect

@nepali_nepali: thanks for boosting up my optimism! you sound like my mentor. yo optimism bhanne kuroko paiso pardo rainchha, jatti lage ni hunchha!
that Irish guy is the one who got me interested into cancer. when i graduate after two years I'll have at least 2 publications with primary authorship, 2-3 more with co-authorship, couple of poster presentations at conferences including one at the AACR (the most awaited one!), 3.9 GPA, and a good MCAT score, internships, physician shadowing, etc etc
considering these things, I'm not worried too much about getting into the program.

I'm taking about MD Anderson as my primary target for now. i'll be doing an internship at Baylor in Houston this summer, that'll be a good opportunity to learn about neighboring schools including MD Anderson.
i agree with you about going for good rather than considering time spent.
thanks for your advise.
