Firstly namaste to all sajhabasi.

Firstly I'm totally desperate about going to school. I'm poor in english. And most of the good college need TOEFL to get in. And to go to community college i have to go throuh certain process like taking placement test. I'm afraid of that if i'm placed in begining level. It might take me to get started my own subject-accounting, not less than 2 years. To go through this process i'm too old- 34 years.

In other hand i have bachelor degree in accounting which i had done long time ago-5 years. I almost forget everything about accounting except some journal  entries. I went to different college where TOEFL is not required but are way expensive than community colleges and heard that going to that kind of college is wasting of time and money for the future purpose. Is that true.

Lastly my frens What i need is please suggest me is it better way to get in some college where TOEFL is not required for the future purpose? What is the chance of getting job like me who has no tallent at all?  Pleas help me to get out of this kind of dillema.

Desperately waiting for your suggestion.

Thanks
Jaya Nepal

I'm not expert in the field of accounting so i can't suggest specific things. But, based on what you wrote, I can give a few tips.
So, you are in the states and you are saying that your english is poor, you want to go to school and get an accounting degree and use that to get a job. But, you don't want to take TOEFL, right? What's your problem with taking TOEFL? Do you think it's hard? If you think so, then America is not for you. (Sorry for being harsh, but that's the reality). If you don't have good english it's going to be really hard, especially for people like you in the field like accounting where a good communication skills is a must.
All i can suggest you is to take TOEFL, and go to a good college. If you think you can't beat TOEFL, then there's no guarantee that you'll be able to do well at college and afterwards. So, better start working right now rather than looking for cheap ways out.
Good luck with everything. Don't worry about age, I've seen people in 50s studying with me in the same clas.

Drkancho bro firstly thank you very much.

I don't have any proble at all taking TOEFL. I just don't wann go through the ESL in community college. I tried to find out the institue where i can take TOEFL classes. Once i'm done with TOEFL i will be alright bro. I have been thinking so. I have been trying to read at home myself. But i'm still afraid of taking test.  I even tried to find toefl institue.

Infact I have been living in northern virginia state since 4 years and tired of working in a gas station. So plannig to go to school. I have no proble at all taking TOEFL test. Problem is where to go to take the TOEFL classes. If i go throught the ESL classes in community college. Its quite time consuming and even no gurantee to get my credit transfered. I have been trying to get my credit transfered which i earned when i was in my motherland.

i'm never offended bro rather love ur suggestion. Should go to commnity college and start ESL? Pleas suggest me whenever u get time.

Thank you verymuch once again.

don't go the ESL route bro, that's just a waste of time and money. i don't know about the institutes that offer TOEFL classes but what I can say is those classes are not necessary. I didn't go to any institute, I studied on my own and saved time and money.
I studied for about a month at home, took the practice tests given in the book (the book i used was Barron's) and went to take the test (it was IBT). I got a fairly good score for just a month's self-study (101 out of 120). I did worst in my speaking section (21/30) because I didn't practice well, and writing was okay (24/30) but i did really well in the other two sections - reading and listening (28/30 each).
You've been in the states for 4 years which means you know english pretty good, you can do really well. Be confident, it's not that hard. If you study well for 2 months, you'll rock! But give some more time to prepare for writing and speaking section because we Nepali tend to be lazy in writing and hesitant in speaking.
Go for it, you'll do just fine, you just have to be confident and everything will turn out right.

Accountants gets paid for doing taxes and Helping managers making financial  decisions with the help
Of different financial statements and balance sheet not for writing essays and presentations so if there is any major that i can think of which requires the least amt of critical thinking, writing skill, and public speaking; that is accounting.. I don't know what drkamchoo is trying to prove here

Kaplan runs TOEFL preparation classes. There are many kaplan centers in DC or NOrthern Virginia like Roslyn, Tyson Corners, 20th M street DC etc. Go to Kaplan website and find out your program and center. I don't have any experience though. Good luck!

Gorkhali keto ji,
I kind of agree with Dr Kanchho on that w/o proper english it would be hard to survive here w/o odd jobs. Accounting has lots of technicality involved hence you might get by if you are very good on the subject. But from reading your post, that doesn't seem to be the case.

If your purpose is just to study to stay in status, then it might not matter much. BUT, if you want to live a good life here, consider spending some time and investment on getting your english better, along side getting a degree on accounting. You have to work hard, no other option.
TOEFL is an easy test, have you ever tried to take a practice test yourself? Maybe you don't need a TOEFL class at all. Regardless, do give it a serious thought and plan well before you take any step.

34 years, living in the US for 4 years, and working in a gas station makes me think that u are a DV guy. I salute your thought of going to college and getting a degree. This is what most DV guys do not do. They work in gas station and never think of moving ahead by getting educated. I recommend you to take a toefl soon and join a college. Good luck bro!!
