Sugar Cream Puffs at Fuji Bakery

The sugar cream puffs at Fuji are something else. Truly, they are. Not only are they just divine but they’re also a good “I’m sorry for yelling at you this morning” apology or a “you’re the best mom in the whole wide ” thank you too. Till date, no one I’ve purchased them for has been unhappy to see them.

The one-inch square puffs have a delicious sweet gooey filling – chilled and pudding-ish (not entirely sure, I’m not really what you’d call a baker or a chef).

Regardless, whether you do or do not know of the middle filling coming through it’s always a delight. It’s kind of like them raspberry-filled chocolate or stuffed Turkey (though I, for one, have never had a thing for stuffed Turkey). A Mizo special, if I’m not mistaken, is rice stuffed into a pig where when ready the rice is the bigger deal than the pork. Get it? Anyway, I’ve never had that.

Point being, the cream part of that puff is the best part of the puff.

But, as always, I digress.

The puffs are excellent during a short tea break or even as a midnight snack. They go perfectly well with tea or coffee. And, they absolutely must be served chilled. Though they’re good enough at the Bakery – where it’s stifling (well, it is a bakery and there are ovens baking) and the fans offer little solace, they’re best brought home, thrown in the fridge and consumed after midnight.

At Rs.30 for a pack of six it’s a bit of a disappointment because between the quantity (six, six!) and just how delicious they are, it means they will be gone before you can say “yum”. Consider yourself warned and plan accordingly. Don’t think for a second you’ll open a pack and share it with your loved one upstairs (they won’t be make it past the first flight of stairs) or that you’ll save some for later. Not happening.

Aside from the lovely puffs at Fuji are a few over bakery items. A good selection of both veg and non-veg snacks – the only chicken patty (or whatever it is called) in all the world I can munch on without the aid of sauce. It’s the exact perfect moisture. The oddly oblong and twisted donuts are soft. Also as Rs.30 but for two, it’s not a bad deal.

Thy also do bread and other chocolate patty and the usual bakery items but be sure to visit early in the day. On more than one occasion I’ve detoured to get there, only to find they are sold out.

A sparsely decorated but spotless place, it’s not designed to serve you endless mugs of coffee while you sit back with your laptop, but it is a good place to take a break from work or rest from a walk.

* heading from Pulchowk to Kupondole, take right at Nabil bank (towards WFP)… then  head towards WFP but take immediate left after the engineering campus!

Since Valley Foodie can’t cook and hates to clean up after creating havoc in the kitchen while frying  eggs in place of a “real meal” the only option she has is to explore and to eat. You may think such an individual could not provide solid food reviews, but really, it’s the opposite (because she watches Master Chef). Anyway, who says the way to a man’s stomach alone is through food?
