Fallacy of current Education System in Nepal

Are our children getting real education? What are they learning in school? Is getting educated means attending school, taking exams and promotion until obtaining high school diploma or college degree? An educated person can read, write, add numbers, has diplomas, certificates, etc. But, is that sufficient to be called an educated person? Any school in Nepal, private or public, do not teach students real value of education. The teachers and the school management do not understand the meaning of educating children.

Real education makes student open minded. An educated person is able to think critically, is open to new ideas, and is able to question conventional wisdom or status quo if necessary. Skepticism is the first thing an elite person turns toward when exposed to any debate or an idea. While attending school to get educated, we learn to read and write. Reading is not just being able to decipher letters, number, words and sentences; it is the way human brain takes in idea from eye to the brain. Writing is to take our idea from brain so that it can be communicated to other individual. Science is taught in every school in Nepal but what does science supposed to teach us. Science teaches us observation and reflection. Being able to read and write makes us human beings and has taken us to the level where we are now. Being educated means communicating our ideas with each other; opening our minds thinking critically so that it can be developed to something bigger. How many schools or college or university in Nepal do that?

The few numbers of world renowned writers, poets, scientists, engineers, innovators created in Nepal coerce us to think that something lacks in our system. The children are supposed to get inspired in school to become great. Their minds are to be cultivated to covet and achieve great things. But, what does the current education system do? It is all about getting a job. Going to school has become pathway to land a mere job. Is that what life’s ultimate purpose is? To land a job after graduating from school and college is the norm. But is that the real purpose of procuring education? Schools fail to create enthusiasm among students that learning is the most fascinating thing. Children should come to school to learn new things and expose to new ideas that their parents or family may not be able to show them. The existence of our world and the universe, the society, the human beings and other flora and faunas are not to be taken for granted. Schools should teach students to be curious and skeptic; not teach them to take things for granted. Instead of getting curious, after attending school the students cease to become astonished by the world and its inhabitants and start thinking about jobs. The teachers like any other adults cease to ask questions about the world and the universe in turn kill the curiosity of a child and link curiosity to absurdity.

Nepal is in a transition phase trying to crawl back up from authoritarian rule to a democratic system. The reason behind the avid hinder towards democratic system is its lack of education. There is a chunk of population who are literate but do not possess real education. The reason I say they do not possess real education is because real education brings people together despite our cultural differences or any differences for that matter. Education provides understanding of human rights, justice, ethics, different cultures, as well as science and technologies. An educated society debates and discusses any impasses between groups of people as oppose to turning into violence. The schools in Nepal teach their students every subject there can be in this world but they fail to teach the fundamentals. It is very important to have an educated population for the democracy to work where population understands it rights and devise law and order accordingly. Government system is for the people, by the people and of the people only when the population is educated enough to understand it.

Nepal needs schools which provide real education. There are few schools in Nepal who does that but then the Nepali society have become pretentious and run after schools with higher tuition fees and foreign teachers. This is to urge every school, school management and teachers in Nepal to do the right thing.
