KFC

Now I’m not one to promote unwholesome deep-fried imported potatoes and chicken, but I gotta say that despite the ridiculously priced (that would be Rs.400) for a tiny chicken burger, fried chicken and a glass of iced lemonade it was money well spent.

After hauling my lazy bum from Patan to Kathmandu to meet my mom to get something off of her to-do list and knowing she’d be a while I thought I’d appease my stomach that had been growling dangerously louder every two seconds.

Durbar Marg is not really my favorite spot in Kathmandu. And I needed a quick bite. I’d visited KFC when it opened (but like two months later to avoid the mile long lines) and I rated it a full fledged meal. Meh is to say it was nothing awful, nothing wonderful.

Can’t say the rating’s changed since.

The chicken I have to admit – in both the burger and on its own is as crunchy at KFC has ever been. The bun is sweet. The lettuce not too un-fresh and the cheese (slapped in for an additional Rs.25 – why the heck is cheese not included in the original price? It’s a burger for crying out loud!) not yak, so that was good.

The meat’s got the unsavory savory juicy effect – which is only reminiscent of all things mass produced, artificially preserved and then shipped two oceans away. Which is to say, yes, it is juicy, but no, not in a good wholesome way.

But I paid for fast food and I got fast food, so I can hardly complain. So, why am I writing this post? Simple – to let you know that if you want good ol’ Kentucky Fried (-woops, hang on, make that “Fresh”) Chicken then you ought to skip over the two that yell KFC over at Ekantakuna and Gwarko – they are Kwality Fried Chicken and will probably cost you half the price, but will fail to provide the plastic-y joy of fast food.

If you are at all worried about your arteries and such then I’d have to say avoid KFC, but honestly, it’s not too bad. If you take into consideration all the other crap we eat (and I’m not even talking about our beloved New Road gudpak) deep fried chicken is surely no less toxic.

KFC is a good place to head over to if you are headache inducing bright lights, overpriced beverages (Rs.80 for a GLASS of Pepsi? I mean your red fake leather seats are nice but I can get an ENTIRE litre in a kirana pasal for that amount) and a taste of the “developed” world.

KFC gets 2/5 because it’s nothing memorable or fantastic, just a place to head to when nothing else is nearby.

Since Valley Foodie can’t cook and hates to clean up after creating havoc in the kitchen while frying  eggs in place of a “real meal” the only option she has is to explore and to eat. You may think such an individual could not provide solid food reviews, but really, it’s the opposite (because she watches Master Chef). Anyway, who says the way to a man’s stomach alone is through food?
