Moneygram/western etc have low upfront cost, but they don't give a good exchange rate. I have tested them a few times. You may find a better rate in thier website, but when you actually call them, they are around Rs. 2 lower than Rastra bank. I  wire to Banijya bank and get their published exchange rate (rbb.com.np).

Local credit unions may have lower fees compared to big commercial banks, if you would like to save on wire-transfer fees.

My credit union does not even ask about my source of my income, but western union asks.

How many of you are going? If you're going alone then I'd take $9,999 with me and then find an alternative way to take the remaining money. If there were 2-3 people going, then I'd have my buddies carry the remaining for me.

Good luck.
