In favor of the society
Wake up early in the morning and head towards work; then return home gazing twinkling stars in the sky. This is my daily routine. Workloads are gripping me so much that I can hardly manage my social life these days.
Most of my schoolmates are abroad. Those who are in the town are also engaged in their own life. Some are teaching in the schools, some are busy in checking patients, some are into software development and some are involved in their family businesses. Though we all live in the same small town, due to our tight work schedule we can only manage to meet in Facebook. Thanks to this social networking site as it has remained as the only platform to keep in touch with a decade back school friends.
A couple of weeks before, one of our seniors posted an event in Facebook. The event was about ex-students’ gathering in the school. Around 60 alumni turned up. Everyone had the same comments and questions to share, ‘You’ve lost weight.’, ‘Where are you these days?’ and ‘What are you doing?’ We moved from one class to another mesmerizing our fun filled school days. We even searched, if there were still old desks with our names carved but the new paints had hidden our mischievous writings on the desks.
The gathering decided to form a group of alumni. I was deeply touched by a senior’s view, ‘With the help of this school, today, we are able to stand on our own feet. So, let’s give back something to the school and the society.’ It injected the force of motivation inside our minds to step towards volunteering.
We also sketched our future plans. ‘Some of our friends are doctors, why don’t we organize a health camp?’, ‘I am a musician and I want to arrange an extra music class every week’, ‘Let’s help financially needy students.’, ‘Let’s collect the old books and donate to the library.’ One poured in an idea and the other added another brilliant thought.
Most of us have numerous expectations from the society but we never think about giving back to the society. Spending a couple of hours a week in a volunteer work can bring change in the society. At the same time, it can bring rejuvenation in our monotonous home to office and office to home life style. I believe that little efforts can collectively bring huge changes. And after all, we all are in need of a change, a positive change.
