January 25, 2012 By: Microphile

It has been a long while since we traveled in a public transportation as a family. With my father stationed out of the valley for work and my mother who is paranoid about leaving our home unattended (daylight robbery is the thing in Kathmandu); and with a sibling who has crossed the imaginary borders of belonging, we seldom travel in micros together. It must be something to do with how we have created our own spaces which do not frequently overlap with each other; I will have no need to go to my father’s workplace and nor will my mother ever accompany me to my work.

Hence my amazement when I saw a family of six climb in the micro bus I was commuting by to get to my work. The oldest of all was a wise looking old lady with sandalwood tika on her forehead, canopied under the warm looking “70 percent pashmina and 30 percent silk” shawl. She took the seat behind the drivers. She was assisted in her endeavor to be seated by, presumably her daughter or daughter-in-law; clad in red and adorning a pote. There was a helper, a mid-teen girl who was carrying few ‘zebra-bags’ and handling a baby in her lap at the same time. Two boys clung onto the lady in red and started their chatter as soon as they were inside. From the back seat, I could see their heads bobbing up and down, up and down while the micro resumed its pace.

The radio was on and a popular FM station was broadcasting news about an accident in Surkhet, I heard the voice say “a family of six”, “hit by a truck” and “all dead”; at least something in between those lines because I was constantly distracted by what the child had to ask the wise, old lady. What did the child care if there had been a major accident due to carelessness, what did I care for that matter? His inquisitiveness was rather inclined towards the silently sublime looking Pashupatinath temple on our right, just beyond that bridge. He kept asking, “When is Shivaratri?”, “Where is Swayambhu?”, “Is this bus going to the Bus Park?”, and the one that really interested me, “Did Shiva jee actually take a form of a deer and came in the park?” This question came along with a series of related question of who, how, where and when would Shiva jee come in the disguise of a harmless and most often romanticized creature.

The wise lady looked at the boy reassuringly and replied, “Yes dear, Shiva bhagwan comes in the form of a deer and roams around the park.” The boy moved on to the next question but I kept looking at the wise old lady’s face; I could find no hint of assurance in hers because somewhere, I know she must be thinking about the family that was killed in the distant road to nowhere.

Microphile loves to travel however, since her fantasies of travels into the Egyptian pyramids and Saharian deserts are, well, mere fantasies; she makes do with the hazardous amount of traveling she has to do in micro-buses, aka, micros. She loves to read while traveling in micros. All that traveling has most probably caused some spinal/brain injuries that she is unaware of; while she continues to travel by micros every morning; observing the mundane and writing about them in this blog.
