February 22, 2012 By: microphile

Perhaps I am moving one micro-stop at a time; last time it was Koteshwor. This time it is the Pashupati area. Usually, the highlight of the Pashupati area is the broad ‘shopping area’, with arrays of stalls with clothes ranging from summer to winter wears. Obviously, the temple is of greater importance and most probably the biggest highlight of this area (given the name) but for someone whose micro stops adjacent to these stalls and street vendors; this is the view that dominates my one-five minutes pause in the ride.

Although I am not very good with recreating images through words; let me try to explain what Pashupati area looked like in the aftermath of Shivaratri. Shivaratri, when Lord Shiva is worshipped mainly by women and young ladies in the hopes of landing a ‘good’ husband like Shiva jee in the day and venerated by the jogis, young boys, and men in the night with who-know-what, comes like a vision of euphoria and vanishes into the smokes of the dusk. Controversies go rampant; with police officials unable to control the amount of you-know-what and you-know-whos. My mother exclaimed at how you-know-what was being distributed in huge amount and no law to control or punish.

By the way, the only reason I refer to you-know-what as “you-know-what” is because I am not sure what would be a good way of putting it; just in case. I would not like to offend any side of this controversy.

Well, so the day after Shivaratri looks like a hurricane site; with only scaffoldings of the previous day reminiscent of what happened; tents being uprooted and people on the move; and one of the most prominent of all: the amount of plastic all over the road. I am not sure where it comes from! I know, it can be safely said that the area itself is not the most beautiful sight to behold; but surely, the sudden increase in plastics is worrisome. The plastics are everywhere; on the street, on the pavement, and everywhere my eyes can reach from inside the micro: it looks like Shiva jee brought in more than his good self.

The kinds of plastics ranged from polythene bags to those used as covers for packaging. It is apparent from the amount of plastics that the crowd is huge which is not something you will need to read this blog to find out; but what is astonishing is about how easily these were thrown about. I feel sad for Pashupati, Shiva jee, people who live around; and for myself. I feel sad that while our religious and spiritual beliefs are heavily founded on the concept of purity; our actions do not reflect this basic premise.

I am not a theist; nor am I an atheist. I think some of the people like to call people like us “agnostic”. I am not sure. But I do believe in spirituality. I believe that what we sow is what we reap. If we have only plastics to sow, perhaps the only harvest we will have of is plastics. So, if our rituals and aspirations are founded on purity; then why aren’t our actions?

Microphile loves to travel however, since her fantasies of travels into the Egyptian pyramids and Saharian deserts are, well, mere fantasies; she makes do with the hazardous amount of traveling she has to do in micro-buses, aka, micros. She loves to read while traveling in micros. All that traveling has most probably caused some spinal/brain injuries that she is unaware of; while she continues to travel by micros every morning; observing the mundane and writing about them in this blog.
