Let us have a quirky discussion about the obscure topic of skin show in ladies' formal dress.

While my generation has grown up wearing skirts that show a little bit of leg, I have known many older persons who were shocked by formal skirts. When I was young, an uncle protested that a woman "came to work in knee length skirts." The issue is even more exaggerated in the US where almost everyone wears knee length skirts to work. While young people adjust easily to these modern outfits, their parents often have a  hard time digesting so much skin exposure in the US!

On the other hand, we have grown up with the sari, and don't think much of the little bit of skin showing as it seems pretty natural to us. Recently, I was surprised that a group of my international friends commented that "it is so unusual to see the tummy displayed in a formal dress!" Another friend commented that women with flabby bellies wearing  sari is like wearing a bikini with a flabby belly!! In Nepal, everyone wears a sari, regardless of whether their belly is toned or not, and we never think that we have to go the gym to make our body sari worthy (like for a bikini) !

I guess we each take our own culture for granted, and anything that is different from that is strange to us. After coming abroad, on the one hand you see what is strange about other cultures, and on the other, you are pointed out what is strange about your culture, from everyone else's perspective.

It makes sense for men to wear underwear to contain their equipment. Women don't have anything to contain so no need to wear anything.
