Hello expert, I come to USA on June of 2014 on J1 visa. The university send my one form name W2. In W2 form, it is written as: Wages :22385 Dollar Federal tax held:2770 Dollar I ask one of my friend that what I should do next? She said I should fill a form called 1040 EZ or 1040 NR EZ. I am not sure which form I should fill for research fellow? Can I find template to fill it? The instructions says mistake will be a crime charge. If anyone of the expert is kind and mail me how to fill this, I really appreciate. My Email: yurika555@outlook.com Thank you, I hope to fill it correct, rather than regret later my some ignorance. Best wishes Yurika

Urika: Looks like you have to file as nonresident aliens 1040NR, if you are returning home after finishing and if you use 1040 ez, irs would not know your status and will be accepted.
While filing 1040 NR it will not give you standard deduction therefore the refund will be low. I had known a student using Itemize deduction and lowering the taxable income and getting more refund. Do some research what you can itemize.
Deepocean: Just saying1099 does not provide what you have to do? 1099 is used for various purposes and the box number checked or has the dollar amount matters. 1099 G mean if you have received refund in 2013 and your tax filing software will ask this info and you will put the dollar amount , later it will ask did you itmize or standard deduction , once you choose the one you have used, it will tell you whether it is taxable or not.
Bottom line is when you have used standard deduction : state tax refund is not taxable.
If your stock value is down: there is nothing to do with filing taxes unless you sell it or it turns to a worthless stock. I mean when you sell it then the loss or the gain must report for the tax year your are filing your tax. Swing by library or post office and grab an instruction book 1040 Ez or 1040 whatever you have used in 2013. Read it and it will give you first-hand information. Much more reliable than ours.
There are lot other tax preparing software: may be free or 9.99. Have you heard State Montana is not accepting Turbo tax software?

HI Ujl sir, Thank you for the link. I still can't decide which fits me well. I am non resident, also single. I roughly calculate from table, if I calculated correct, I may get 1327 dollar approx if 1040Ez is filed. On the other hand filling 1040 NR EZ gives like 400 dollars return by looking the chart table. But it lead me confusion which form is appropriate to take action on. I just have stipend, but no other wages to adjust later. I hope to find a conclusive answer by further ideas or experiences. Thanks, Yurika

Hi Magorkhe1 Sir, Thank you for the response. From your suggestions,it seems to me that 1040 EZ is just acceptable, while this is not accurate form, right? I am not sure whether I will return home soon or change to H1B in future. I want to file the appropriate form that won't affect in future. Do you think I need to file form 8843 as well? Best, Yurika

@ Yurika... 1040 EZ is for US citizen and Permanent Resident. Since you are in J1, you are required by US law that you either use 1040NR-EZ or 1040NR. In their website, IRS have clearly indicated by saying "must use this form". "Must" means there are no exceptions. @deepocean...I have never used Turbo Tax. I use other software like 1040.com etc.

Since u r single, have only one source of income and have no dependents, file form 1040 NR-EZ, it's pretty straight forward. Filing 1040 EZ might give u more refund but can create problems later on if u decide to stay in US or if u r selected in IRS random audit. You also need to file 8843.
