After the accident of Turkish Airline 726 on Wednesday March 4th, 2015, the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Association (IFATCA) has announced it's decision to cancel all International flights to Kathmandu Tribhuwan International Airport, until a computer guidance system has been installed to avoid such accidents in times of low visibility.
The spokesperson for the IFATCA stated, "We have been very lenient with the officials at Tribhuwan Intl Airport in extending the deadline for installing the Computer Guidance System for several years, but after today's incident all bets are off. We simply cannot risk the lives of innocent people due to the incompetency of the Government of Nepal in ensuring a risk free system of air transportation."
A spokesperson at the TIA revealed that there is a top down system of corruption which leaves very little room for improvements or necessary safety precautions. "I would not be surprised if it takes over 3 months to get the Computer Guidance System in place in working condition." he added.
This would mean a huge inconvenience to all travelers to Nepal, who will have to find alternate means of transportation. The closest one being the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi, India.
According to Google, it would take approximately 10 hours and 19 minutes via car to drive from the Varanasi Airport to Kathmandu.
