THE Nepalese administration set up by King Gyanendra has called on Maoist rebels to hold peace talks or risk facing "alternative steps".

"We ask the Maoists once again to come to the negotiation table and help to solve the present political crisis," said new Home Minister Dan Bahadur Shahi, one of the 10-member royalist cabinet sworn in yesterday.
"If the Maoists do not come forward, we may have to think of alternative steps," Mr Shahi said in comments broadcast by state television.

He did not elaborate on what action the administration might take against the rebels, who have been waging an increasingly deadly nine-year campaign to topple the monarchy and set up a communist republic.

Kaleketo....I think your title should read...MAIBADI GIVEN ULTIMATUM, hoina ra?

Good thing about the recent move by the King is that now it's "waar ki paar" situation for the king. He has now put the throne on the line ...we are not going to be in limbo no more.

My guess is that he'll do everything in his power to make it right for the people this time as so much is riding on this decision of his. Being as shrewd as he is, I don't think he's taken this step without some sort of a "green light" from the US eventhough officially US has condemned the action. There are always back-door deals are made that don't surface in the limelight.

India, too, has a whole lot of stake in flushing out the Maoists because the Maoists situation has overspilled into India giving India a big headache. They Maoists have been collaborating with a whole slew of Indian extremists including the Naxalites and ULFA.
