I am on F1 visa right now. Can my dependents (F2) get Social Security Number? If so, is anyone familiar with the procedure? Thanks

Probably no states will allow SSN for F2 dependents. There were few states which allowed SSN for F2 dependents for the purpose of Driving license. In the state of my residence, it was stopped in February 2002. I have seen few F2 dependents (who applied for certain professional licensure exam, passed it but couldn't get the licence without a SSN. They had to enroll to school, change from F2 to F1 and get the SSN. It's really tough these days.

So far as I know, it is not possible. The current immigration policy forbids anyone to obtain a SSN even if he or she has an F1 Visa,if he or she is not employed by the institute which sponsored them the F1 visa. I expect some furthering of this discussion.

Thanks Harris and Avant. I know someone who came as F2 (around 2001/2002) and later took nursing exam and worked here. They moved from where I am now. I will try to contact them. Lets keep posting if anyone has info. on this. I really need to find the answer.
