As far as the SSN number is concerned, you will need to take your Green Card (either the card itself or the passport stamped by the U.S authorities when you entered the country as a Legal Permanent Resident i.. "Green Card" holder) to the local Social Security Administration Office and apply for a Social Security number. You should get the card in the mail within 2 - 3 weeks. You can look up the office location, phone number and office hours on the web.

As far as benefits for "Green Card" holders is concerned, this is a question that would need a lot of space to answer. Some of the major benefits are that you can apply for U.S citizenship after you have lived in the U.S for about 5 years; sponsor family members and generally take advantage of all the benefits that a U.C Citizen is entitled to--the major difference is that you cannot vote in local or National elections and if you commit any crime that carries a sentence of more than 365 days, you can be stripped of the green card and deported.
