China Drills Holes In Drug Users' Heads
Chinese authorities have resumed treating drug users with brain
surgery, after abandoning the practise less than two years ago over health
issues.
The controversial procedure involves doctors drilling a one centimetre
hole in a person's head into which is inserted a long needle deep into
the brain, which is then heated to up to 80 degrees Celsius and clamped
inside the patient's head for seven days. The operation is supposed to
destroy the part of the brain linked to addiction, though previous
victims complained of 'memory loss, extreme mood swings and weakened sex
drive' (Daily Telegraph).
The technique was first tested in Russia in 1999, when doctors from the
Institute of the Human Brain in St Petersburg drilled holes in 335
people's heads, and (unlike in China) no anaesthetics were used. However,
Russia stopped drilling druggies in 2002 after patient Alexander L
complained he not only suffered headaches but also went back on drugs, much
to the dismay of chief surgeon Sergei Pokohmov.
"The patient's complaints are not serious or true, and the court's
decision (to stop operations) was made without considering any medical
expertise," he told the Guardian in 2002.
"Until now we have had no complaints about the operation. As with any
medical procedure, we do not guarantee 100% success," he moaned,
