kiwi,

If you get u r MBA from big schools then opportunities are plenty. Big consulting firms like McKensie, BCG, Booze Allen are always looking for MBAs. But they only go to big schools.

However I do not think somebody will hire any MBAs straight to the managereial positions without any expereince in the realated fields. If you have an expereince and have an MBA, you can get into managerial or senior positions in u r realated field. Businesses are always looking for people having MBAs apart from the realted expereince.

At the end, always feel good to give some advice to fellow bahadurni. hehehe

peace out

Some more facts.

It is really challenging to get assistantship in business schools especially in MBA. However, there are universileast ties that provide assistanship. But I believe in Ivy league unis, assistanships are very rare. However, there are sponsorships from the businesses in Ivy league unis.

BUt atleast ya gotta choose accredited uni.

Hope this help bahadurni.

peace out

A roadmap, if I may:

Year 0: graduate from well know undergraduate school with solid personal credentials.
Year 1&2: Research Associate at McKinsey Consulting
Year 3&4: first year in B school ranked in Top 10, summer internship in an industry of chosen concentration.
Year 5-8: Consultant at Mckinsey
Year 9: Made partner, got married
Year 10-12: still at Mckinsey
Year 10: got divorced, exhaustion set in, got nervous break-down, quit McKinsey, in re-hab.
Year 15: pulled socks up and got life in order, got senior VP at the industry of choice
Year 16: so far, so good.

GMAT scores depends in Unis you wanna join. However its not only a criteria. They look at your experince, academic performance and others.

In good schools, to get into MBA, you need to have a good GMAT scores. I have seen some frens not getting into MBAs in big schools although having a good GMAT score. However in medicore state unis, you need to have 500 or 550 +. Higher the score better yo have an opportunity. Lower the GMAT score, you will need to have better GPA and expereince.

peace out

Okay, MBA majoring in management?

If you are a citizen or hold a PR of this country and have reasonable number of experience and have, preferably an undergrad degree that hold some weight, MBA in management can add a paper weight in your professional quest.

For about a month and a half ago I have a colleague (Vietnamese American) who has MBA in management who majored in finance in her undergrad. She is earning decent money (yes we talked about it). Also, she had four years of experience (two years as full time and two years as part time) in the related field in Fidelity Invest. So it appears it is working out fine for her.

However:

If you are not a citizen of this country, or have a PR and on top of that do not have decent years of experience to back you up, MBA in management is worth LESS than undergrad degree in accounting, or even finance, IMO. Pardon me for being blunt here, but MBA is management is hardly of any worth if you fall in the second category I mentioned. Why do foreigners who seek H1 here go for technical studies?Because the competition is less fierce and ensures comparatively high probability to land a job. In fact many have to pursue PHD just to remain in status even with these degrees.

So, if you already have a job, and want to add to weight to your case to move higher up, by all means go for it. But if you expect to LAND a job, as a non-resident, please do consider going for a little more rewarding* concentration.

I hope this helps in some way to figure out.

IndisGuise:)

P.S: Bhaute bro, Sachai ko Vietnamese American ayo ni mero dept. ma. LOL. Tyakkai mero chadke ma. Sikako kura sodnu parla yeso mialyera. HAHAHA. ;)

As far as assistantship is concerned check the websites of the unis yo wanna join.

One of the strategy for the school hunt would be make a list of unis depending upon your academics and expereince. Choose some good unis, some medicore. Rank them and apply. Do not just apply in good schools because it is really very challenging to get into these schools. Atleast choose 10 unis to apply. But do not choose any unis that are not accredited cause its worthless.

Hope this help.

peace out

Also, Indi gotta really good point. If you are going for MBA with management major without any expereince, then its gonna be tough. However, even MBA without any major helps to progress in your related field. But then there i sno point of specilization. Ohter option is to go for a part-time MBA which in most cases paid off by the company.

But if you wanna join MBA - mgmt, you will have to try to get into ivy legaue unis. Then you might land up in mgmt consulancy like McKensis, BCG or Booze Allen.

peace out

as a math grad student in a so so school, my suggestion to y'all is that go to top 10 grad school if you really want to do something. Life below that line is a bit dispiriting, if ya know what I mean.So Kiwigal, if you are throwing away money, why don't throw it at schools such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Berkeley, NYU etc? (NYU math program is also some sort of finance program, yielding a lot of moolah, I've heard).

That rhode island school sounds fishy, btw.
