Whassaaa!! Lahure bro!!! :D

The Best band?? eh...Can we consider "Nepathya" as a band? :D:D
One of my all time fav. Nepali bands is "Rock-Yogies" eh!! They rock, and their lyrics are amazing... :D I don't know if they are still around, coz most of the time it is Yogeshwor Amatya going solo... eh!!

Robin and Looza sux when it comes to lyrics ha... Okay, you are banging your head but hey, don't fk the Nepali grammar, if you don't know basic 5 grade grammar, hire a lyrics writer but "Ye bau, bhat khana aau" is simply disgrace to the Nepali Language... After 3 songs I got turned-off just because of the lyrics. eh.. And Never went back there. :P I'd rather listen to "Ghumti ma naaau hai" and suffer ... eh.

Mukti and Revival is arguably the best band in Nepal right now.........

Robin n' Looza and Robin n' the new revolution are the best live performers......

Nepathya has constantly changed their sound have succeeded in that....from folk pop to folk rock to plain rock .....definitely and innovator of new music...

Sabin Rai, Sugam Pokharel have shown a different level of quality to the mainstream muisc..................

Karna Das time and again has proved himself.............

and yes there are a few BANDS out of the mainstream, say the nepalese underground who are just amazing.....

Well, many bands came and many of them disappeared quickly in Nepalese music but I can remember very few that have changed the style and lyrics of prevailing Nepalese music or have simply brought in a new genre of music. I still remember when Crossroads came up with their first album, and how every youth pass around their music tape. I wonder how many in Nepal have not heard “Maya meri Maya” or “ Tyo Mutu lai.” And then after them arrived a bandwagon of rock stars in Nepalese music scene which influenced every teenager to want to join or open up a band after SLC. Everyone wanted to be a music artist. Crossroads became the band that played popular music at that time and left their fans without closure after the band mysteriously split.
Well, few years down the road, came Robin N Looza. A group of extremely talented musicians with singer who was a nepali and could sing English songs like any other English speaking singers. The type of music, lyrics and the style of song was a bit too hard for the Nepalese fans who were used to chewing the cheesy, love, nepali songs with dance melody. But this changed soon and the band was able to garnish much support and their music became almost like you either love it or hate it. Their stage performance stood up way apart from all the previous musicians. They played rock songs, blues melodies and knew how to keep their fans wanting for more in all of their concerts.

The Himalayan Band, I believe was the best during those days early 80's. And still my favourite - Gajulu la Akhhai Choppena, Jalama Thalama Timi lai Samjha, Sala-la sala-la bagna Khola Jhai, and ofcourse, Musu Musu hasi dayu etc. BTW does any one have collections of their songs?

"Nepathya" is the most meaningful and the one that has made an impact on the society...

1. Their songs are good... are always on top of the chart
2. Their albums sell amazingly.
3. They have unique and meaningful lyrics (and music)
4. They have a concept and message in each and every concert/song. The credit of making popular the pop-in-lok-bhakha goes to them.
5. They are one of the most long lasting nepali bands... and so on.

undoubtedly it is one of my favorites...

Nepathya and 1974 A.D. comes to mind. They both have unique sounds and both bands have very taleneted musicians. Looking forward to seeing Nepathya live someday in U.S. 1974 A.D. concerts were really fun.

And of course the Himalayan band..maybe they should have a reunion... that would be something to remember. I am sure there will be a huge audience to see them perform together.

Of the current crop, definitely Nepathya and 1974 AD are the best; Nepathya for their novelty and the constantly changing sound and 1974 for the quality of their music. Some other, like Mukti and Revival and Robin and the NewRevolution, also are very good musically, but their lyrics and for most songs, vocals could be better. Having said that, I always cringe when I hear Chudaina by 1974. Nice melody, nice vocals, but "Chudaina timro maya le yadi timinai yaha nabhaye....samma metinna mera man ka trisna haru....yadi timi najik nabhaye samma..." C'mmon guys, there could have been better choice of grammatically correct words. And there are a few other examples too.

Of the older bands, surely The Himalayans (or is it The Himalayan Band) comes to the top of my mind. They were the pioneers. I really liked the very first album of Cross Roads. Then they faded out. And does anyone remember a band called Sparsha?? Their album Naulo Yatra was one of the very first 'pop' albums to come out, as far as I can remember. Two songs in that album really stand out. The title track and "Aankha" .

Aankha roi diye jalera sapana haru
Bandhan bhatkidiye chalkiyera aanjuli ka chahana haru
Sayad man jodinnan
Jodiye daag dekhinchha
Euta premi ko chahana ko upahas djerai dekhinchha

or something like that.....

Nice to remember old times and old songs...

Kalanki,

My personal best must be, head and shoulders, 1974 AD.

About Himalayans. I was only sort of reminiscing my somewhat quaint association with them way back when. I happened to be a big fan of theirs, you see. Biased though it is for me to be banging on about them, but I thought I could do well with some commentary on them purely for sentimental reasons rather than anything else.

Hey, good to 'see' you still letting loose those cans of laughing gas you've in your claws! :) Boy, do I miss your droll sense of humour. Do keep firing away at your keyboard. :)

Carpe diem

no matter what...i love NEPATHYA and next i like 1947 A. D. They are evergreen band who are still continuing their performance since a decade. Is there anyother band in nepal since a decade.....????
i know there would be so good on their 1st, 2nd album but later on...we even couldn't hear their band name...????rumors says oh their band members are in HK, UK, USA Belgium...!!!we would be hearing like that.
And i am sure in the future only NEPATHYA and 1974 A.D. are going to make a history in nepal as music band.

Can we include "RALFA" as a band here? Though they were close to the leftist movement back in the days, they are the first ones to extensively travel all across Nepal and bring music to the front doors of average Nepali.

If we can include them in the category of a "BAND", I believe they should be on the top the list as well.

Disclaimer: I am not a leftist supporter.

Sandhurst,

I had sent you an email regarding the Himalayans via Sajha. Could you check? Thanks!

Maniac,

Yup, I remember Sparsha. The song you mentioned and the "Kalo akash muni" of Sparsha were really good. Brings back memories of I Sc days....I have both of those songs.
