My friend will be studying in Berkley for fall and she is looking for a room-mate and maybe a job. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please help.

Why not use the student services facility: http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/ ?

Alternatively, you can contact realtors (preferably the ones in Durant St) and/or newpapers in Berkeley to fetch a list of available off-campus accomodation. It's cheaper to live offf-campus, well at least it was when I was there 6 yrs ago.

Plenty of casual jobs if that's what your friend is after in Berkeley and/or San Fran...
