Mr. Giri, Just a quick question for clarification. Sine the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) specifically states that an individual on a f-1 visa will be considered to be in violation of that status and therefore deportable if they work while on the F-1 status- how is this co-op work/study scheme possible? I know that foreign students can take part in Externships as long as they are NOT paid Cash- the exception being the Optional Practical Training (OPT) that is available upon completion of the degree program and valid for a year from the date of issue...again, what am I missing here?

You don't need to complete degree program in order to get OPT. You can start OPT any time after your first nine months in F-1 status. You can finish it within your degree program or can keep for after the graduation. Or you can use it partially during and after the degree period.

actually in our college too, u can do almost any off-campus work and consider it a CPT. i worked in the summers in amusement parks, banks doing CPT thru our college. Not many colleges will allow u to do this.. but our college seems very friendly towards International students and give International students more flexibility. we even used to be able to work 30, 40 hours a week during school year until that stupid 9/11 thing.. and then they cut that out and made it 20 hours a week work only max. after graduation i still got my OPT.
