Globalization, Poverty Reduction, Employment Creation-Lessons From Africa

We have been hearing people claiming different results for the impacts of globalization on the developing countries. While globalization is full of risk, it can be adapted to suit our environment. Nepal is still very poor despite a rapid transition to global market economy. What could be the reasons for this? What can we do to harness the benefits of globalization in poverty reduction and employment creation?

Many African countries are having the same fate. They are facing a rapid globalization and yet, the improvements in welfare are low. What are the reasons for this? Poor planning of the economy? Uncalled interventions by the government? There is not a single reason. In fact, the benefits obtained by different people within the same country are also different. It has been found that urban households have been able to harness the benefits of globalization while rural households failed to raise their living standard. Moreover, there are several problems which have been hindering growth in developing countries like Nepal.

A research done on African countries can be a milestone in revealing our own problems. The lessons from Africa could well be utilized for our own benefits. Here are some of the points that have been mentioned in the research paper published by SARPN.

countries need to focus on productivity growth
for a competitive export sector attracting more FDI, improvement of infrastructure, and telecommunication especially, is essential
industrial policies need to be designed and adapted to local conditions
incentives for foreign and domestic investments should be targeted with care.

These are the basic things we should focus on to harness the benefits of globalization. There should be increased spending on infrastructures like transportation and communication which are essential to increase our competitiveness. Moreover, our policies need to be adapted to our local environment. Policies which have been directly copied from other countries may not proove fruitful. Moreover, we should focus on labor-intensive industries as we have some advantage in terms of low wages among others.

These policies are equally relevant to countries like Nepal. What are your ideas on this? Any economist wants to give some suggestions?
