Maoists carry on extortions, abductions

Kantipur Report

SANKHUWASABHA, July 15 - Maoists here in the district have started collecting "donations" from government and semi-government officials. The rebels are visiting each office demanding an amount equal to their 60 days' salary as "tax for people's war", said a government staffer.

"When a group of Maoists came at the municipal office, we informed the rebels that we won't be able to donate them more than Rs 1,000," said a staffer. According to the official, the Maoists will end up with Rs10 million, if they continue the their donation drive in this manner.

District member of Maoist "Rajan" claimed that collecting "donations" and "tax" was essential for the arrangement of the needs of 725 full time members of the party. The party in the district had announced to continue collecting such assistance until an interim government is formed in the country.

Meanwhile a report from Ramechhap said the Maoists on July 2 abducted three girls -- Kalpana Dhungle (20), Sunita Karki (18), and Rita Paudel (17) -- of Pakarbas VDC from their houses. Maoists had taken the girls stating that they would be back at home after participating in an hour-long program. "But they did not return even after 12 days," Kumar Dhungel, younger brother of Kalpana, lamented. Family members of the girls have appealed all to help them in getting free and safe return of girls from the Maoists' custody.

Likewise, in Morang, business community and other civilians of Indrapur VDC on Friday closed a local market and disrupted vehicular movement for two hours along the Mahendra highway in protest against the Maoists' excesses. The Maoists on Thursday evening had allegedly beaten up two businessmen -- Dharma Pokharel and Kedar Thapa. Hundreds of locals took to the streets protesting against the Maoists' assault.

In Dhading, Maoists on Thursday beat up two youths -- Raj Kumar BK and Ganesh Shrestha -- of Muralibhanjyang-6. "The Maoists brutally beat us up interfering in our personal dispute," said one Raj Kumar, who sustained injuries on his forehead. Gopal Bishwokarma of Dalit Sewa Sangh denounced the rebels' action.
