Maoists Kill Three in Nepal
Six more, including two civilians, reported injured in separate incidents

In the first killings of security personnel after Nepal's Maoist Rebels intensified violence following the expiry of their unilateral ceasefire on Jan. 2, three Armed Police Force (APF) personnel were killed and at least six others including two civilians were injured in four separate incidents, Jan. 5.

According to reports, Maoists attacked a police post near a domestic airport in Nepal's western city of Nepalgunj at 5:30 p.m., killing three APF personnel who were guarding the post. Another two APF personnel were injured in the incident. APF, a force formed especially to fight the rebels, has yet to confirm the incident.

Security forces throughout the country have been on a high security alert ever since Maoists abandoned their unilateral ceasefire announced Sept. 3, 2005, and prolonged for a month in early December. The Maoists have blamed the government's "provocation" as the reason why they had to call off their ceasefire, and have added that they had to resume the war for "self-defense" and "democracy." Nepal's government refused to reciprocate the ceasefire the Maoists observed for four months.

Meanwhile, in another incident, Maoists set off a bomb in Nepal's tourist city of Pokhara at 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The bomb, planted on a bicycle, was targeted at a security convoy. An unidentified civilian was injured in the explosion, reports said.

Another Maoist-planted bomb exploded in the District Education Office in Morang district in eastern Nepal, also Thursday. No injuries have been reported so far in the incident.

Similarly, in Mahendranagar district in western Nepal, Maoists opened fire at a highway check post injuring two policemen and a civilian.

Nepal's Maoists have been waging a violent war since Feb. 1996 to topple the monarchy. Recently, they entered into a 12-point agreement with Nepal's political parties, expressing commitment to universal human rights covenants.

After the Maoists announced a "people's action" in late December against candidates participating in and officials overseeing municipal elections scheduled to take place on Feb. 8, they clarified to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal that it would not include physical violence.
