Hey,
things you would want to install
1. Anti Virus (Norton is good or McAfee there are lot more to select from)
2. Personal Firewall (u can get some free online.. one of the good one is Cyber Armor)
3. FireFox. (its betteer than IE ;) hehehe just the microsoft thingy )
4. Also Define users .. One user id for ur self and other user ids for other users .. this will help ur system stay clean and secure

make sure u keep back ups .. u never know when the HDD may crash and such..

the first thing u should do is check if your computer is waterproof or not. This can be tested by dropping some water drops inside your PC. And make sure that you have a smoke detector working properly. If the smoke detector does not beep after sometime, then your PC is waterproof which means you got what you paid for. But if your smoke detector beeps then you should get a stone and break it on your head.

Before installing any software, make sure the harddisk has at least 2 partitions. If not, create partitions by reinstalling the OS. It is a good idea to keep the OS and program files in C and all your data files in D. This way you won't lose your important data if your system goes wrong and you format/reinstall the OS. After that, install firewall and antivirus softwares, and use Windows Update.
