As I am sure are a lot of other emotions like anger, jealousy, greed etc, that if not controlled and kept in check, can be detrimental to both the individual and society.

Just a thought.

It is the social upbringing, acclamitization and practice that triggers the behavior rather than genetical inheritance............it is the way the knowledge is passed on to you and how do you see each other.....and now in this globalised world.....the existence of humanity depends on how do you see and behave with the ppl with different color and background....So, in my point......it is total false......

Everybody is discriminative to certain extent. My favorite color...that statement itself is discrminative to other colors. Pets ..why are Poodles preffered to bulldogs ? My favorite song ? he he
Anyone who says they are not discriminative are lyin sons of beeches.

" Anyone who says they are not discriminative are lyin sons of beeches."

Discrimination can be postive discrimination too, no? Like the examples you mentioned. And like the tax code ..LOL! Rather, it is prejudice and it's causes - ie racism, casteism - and not discrimination in itself, that is a cause for concern.

Just my thoughts.

Being a prankster as a kid, I am still amazed to watch people's different attitude when I say my different fake surnames. The ones I have used are Sharma, Joshi, Bharati,Shah,Rana. All the above mentioned names could be used for Nepali, Indian,Pakistan, Bangladeshi, Bahun, Newar, Chhetri and more.
Does it say anything????

Tisa .. he he ... yeah, like how quickly some people try to find out what your last name is, no? :) Not that I have any problems with mine, but when your whole world revolves around fitting people into caste archetypes, then what else can you expect? Sad, very sad.

And this case in Pakistan is an extreme one but there are cases of a similar nature but perhaps a lesser magnitude in Nepal too.We are pretty up there when it comes to behavior that resembles Atila the Hun or the Mongol Hordes.

:)

Be it +ve or -ve it is still discrimination. Tax code is used by governments to categorize its citizens to make tax collecting easy. But that in itself is already flawed because you are using people's features, last names, yearly income, marital status etc etc to cateegorize the society. By doing so you have already discriminated people.
All the flat nosed ones in one side, all the divorsed in another, all the hindus, all the six figure salaries in another... etc etc

I am running close to my 20 posts per day and at the risk of starting a lengthy debate that I can't fully take part in, I'd have to disagree. I think discrimination can be looked at from a slightly different moral angle. I think it is okay to positively discriminate under special circumstances - people have special needs - both physical and mental - and it is incumbent upon society, in my opinion, to positively discriminate in the favor of such people. Buses with handicap access, trains with handicap seating, braille buttons - why not?

Even the tax code - I understand the concern on robbing Peter to pay Paul. And that not being fair. Sure, but let's face it, neither are prosperity and poverty. Government is here to stay and as long as government stays and there are disparities in income, there will be positive discrimination in favor of the less privileged when it comes to taxes.

It ultimately boils down, in my opinion, to relative morality rather than economics, which might prove the case to be otherwise. The moral case for helping the underprivelged is so strong across almost all societies that it is likley to continue to influence economic policy in most societies.

Your turn now :)

(and apologies in advance if it takes me a while to get back)

Have a good one!

discrimination is what maked us love other ..
We would all save our own child from a burning building even if it meant a thousand strangers would die and we'd all kill in defenses of our wives husbands brothers sisters parents and childre.
still we should belive in human goodness and mortal grace.

I totally agree with you...and that's what I've been telling people all the time whenever they mention about racial discrimination here in the US.

Discrimication is embeded into the very fundamental building blocks of all living creature.
Discriminating simply means differentiating. From one to another, from favourable to non favourabnle, from hot to cold, from cold to colder, from you to me and so on.

It may sound politically correct to say no to discrimination but I always wonder how can one get rid of the basic instinct that is fundamental aspect of any living being.

I'm saying this NOT because I want to make some political statement or make some crazy statement....It is just a plain science.
