Only Nepalese to work as security guards in Malaysia

The Malaysian government has decided to only allow Nepalese people to works as security guards in the country, reports the Kantipur Daily. With this decision, some one hundred thousand more Nepalese people are set to get employment opportunities.

Malaysia had reached the decision of not allowing foreign nationals other than from Nepal to work as security guards Monday. Being the second major destination for Nepalese overseas workers, currently more than 300,000 Nepalese are engaged in various works in Malaysia. Among them some 30,000 are working as security guards in various cities of Malaysia.

The Malaysian government has directed the concerned companies to give other job responsibilities to security guards from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia including others and to appoint Malaysian and Nepalese nationals in their place.

Among the Nepalese labourers working in Malaysia, the income level of those working in security jobs is comparatively higher than others. Their minimum earnings per month is Rs 30,000.

In the notice issued by the government, it is been stated that former Nepalese soldiers, police and Gorkhalis would be allowed to work as ‘security guards’ in companies and residences. Malaysian nationals are also entitled to as security guards, but because of their tendency of taking more holidays, companies prefer Nepalese workers to them.

Vice-chairman of Malaysia branch of the Non-Resident Nepalese Association Hari Bhattrai told Kantipur Daily that with the rise in criminal activities in Malaysia, there is demand of almost 100,000 security guards for big residential complexes, banks, industries, hotels, companies every year. The demand for security guards is growing in restaurants, shops, travel agencies and offices.

Issac Mohammed, chief of the Malaysian Immigration Department, told Kantipur Daily that if they see any company employing security guards other than Malaysian and Nepalese, such would be punished with a fine of 10 thousand Ringet or sentenced to three years jail or even both.
