Ii think it depends on what kind of crash...i'm not tech guru but once my comp also crashed.......so tech guy in my college tookout hard disk and joined to another computer as usb, (he had those connecting wire) and rescued my files. After which I reinstalled OS. I was almost pissed off as I had not backed up my project paper for few weeks, though I used to back up every week.

Not sure if I got it clearly.
Is it Windows (operating system) Crash  or Hard Drive Crash ?

If the Hard Drive is unreadable I would not know how to recover from that  ..But, If it is just a Windows crash (windows not starting and continously giving Black or Blue screen)  like blue screen of death or some other windows file error,  it is pretty easy to recover all your files and possibly even fix some like I did for mine using Boot Cd like BartPE CD or other even some Linux Live CD like Knoppix. Even other Live CD like Ubuntu will work just fine.

If you are real MicroSoft lover, Microsoft Live One Care will also do it for you. But I would recommend using either BartPE or Live CD for it as they are free open source softwares.
You can very easily pull data by connecting either external hard drive or Fashdrive through your USB port.

I think you should try using ubuntu that boots up directly from CD. You might need to check your bootup sequence first, disable boot from hard drive option, then run ubuntu. If it recognize your hard drive as a local drive, they you are almost done. You may be able to access your data files in it.

If the crash is in your hard disk, it may be hard to recover your important data. If it is very important for you, I recommend consulting some professional companies offering data-recovery service than trying yourself. I heard, microsoft also has data recovery service. Although the data recovery services are expensive, they do not guaranty successful recovery. Chance of success is around 60% only. In 2004, I had my hard disk crashed. and I took my hard disk to Sharp company. They could not recover my data, but they were able to repair my hard drive. Spending about $50, they returned me computer with pre-installed softwares and systems, exactly same as in the newly bought version of the computer but with none of my own data I wanted to recover. They told they were unable to read data segments and could not access to old data. Then, when they reset all, the hard disk started to work. The hard disk still works.
