A retired English teacher survived being locked in a toilet in Aberdeen for four days last week after the door handle jammed, preventing him from escaping. David Leggat, 55, popped into the loo at the virtually deserted Kittybrewster and Woodside Bowling Club last Monday afternoon and told reporters he drew on survival training skills to warm his feet in a basin, when no-one else came to the club until Thursday. "I had nothing with me to eat so I sipped cold tap water to keep me going," he told the Aberdeen Evening Express. " "At least there was a toilet to use," the unmarried bowler added, "The only thing I regret is not getting trapped behind the bar." Ironically, toilets featured in a top ten list of Britain's most ludicrous laws recently in a poll conducted by satellite channel UKTV Gold, who reported 'If someone knocks on your door in Scotland and requires the use of your toilet, you are required to let them enter' though in Mr Leggat's case he was eventually released by the club secretary and a cleaner with a screw-driver. Toilets also played a significant role in the life of Liverpool house star Yousef who told Skrufff a couple of years ago he'd developed a fear of heights following a childhood incident. "I have dreams about doing parachute jumps in which I go up but I don't actually jump," Yousef told Skrufff in 2004. "I think it goes back to when I was a kid I used to have this recurring dream where I used to fall out of a first floor window into the street. Because there was one time I was locked out and tried to climb up the drain pipe to get through the toilet window and got stuck so maybe that stayed with me," he suggested. Conversely, Chris Lowe from the Pet Shop Boys told us last year he'd regarded toilets as a sanctuary when his band first found fame in the mid 80s with their debut (and eventually number one) single West End Girls. "When the original West End Girls came out on import, I was a student at Liverpool University. I'd go to a club in Liverpool sometimes and it would come on, and I'd be really embarrassed in case anyone thought it was me," said Chris. "I'd run into the toilet as soon as it came on, even though no-one actually knew it was me," he laughed.

Male spiders play dead for sex: study

Advice on how to score with the ladies would probably never include the strategy that works best for at least one species of male spider: playing dead.

Not all male nursery web spiders looking for a little arachnid sex adopt this technique, but those that do more than double their chances of hitting the jackpot, according to new study in Behavioral Ecology, reported Wednesday in the British magazine New Scientist.

In experiments designed by Trine Bilde of the University of Aaarhus in Denmark, researchers set up date-and-mate opportunities for Pisaura mirabilis, a species native to Europe.

All the males sought to attract partners by offering a gift of food, held in the mouth.

But the ones that lay flat and motionless -- even if meant getting dragged about by a female that had latched onto the victuals -- wound up in a much better position, as it were, to engage in sexual activity.

The hapless males that tried the direct approach wound up keeping the free meal but not getting what they were really after.

Males that played dead were also allowed to copulate longer than males that did not, ensuring more eggs could fertilized, the researchers reported.

Playing dead is a well-known defence mechanism in nature, but this is apparently the first time such behaviour has been observed as a strategy for obtaining sexual favours.

Anti-ageing substance found in bullfrogs: researchers

While it only turns into a handsome prince in fairy tales, the homely bullfrog may harbour a valuable anti-ageing substance for humans, South Korean researchers say.

A team led by Professor Kim Se-kwon of Pukyong University in Busan says it isolated a peptide with antioxidant properties from bullfrog skin.

Because of the properties, the material is useful in removing free radicals -- molecules that hasten the ageing process of human cells.

Alpha-tocopherol, also known as Vitamin E, is traditionally considered as the most active antioxidant in humans and widely used in medicines and health supplements.

But its price keeps rising because of surging world demand.

"The new sustance can provide an economic alternative to tocopherol," Kim told AFP Tuesday, referring to another antioxidant. The team's discovery was published by Bioresource Technology, an international journal, last year.

"Because it is water-soluble, the substance may be consumed in much more diverse ways than the oil-soluble tocopherol. You may put it in soft drinks, for example," he said.

The newly found material is also 10 percent more efficient than tocopherol in curbing oxidisation, he added.
