one option is get ssn is via working in school during your F1 status. I got mine working in school's dining. But i'm not saying you should work in dining . Heard about other options but am not sure.

Yes you can apply for the ssn in first semester provided you have an oncampus job.

You can get SSN once you get on-campus job, it doesnot matter on which semester you are, sometimes the SSN process might also depends on which college you are applying for. If you dont get a on-campus, as a law a student can start working after 9 mths of continue studies excluding Summer break, if you take class in summer you are eligible after 9 mths. To get SSN after 9 mths, you need to get a job offer that compiles your course of studies.

To sum up , Yes you can get a SS card while in F1. You need to apply for SS card along with a job offer, since you are in F1 , a on campus job , at least for now. Best of luck.

If you already got H1, there should some ways to get SSN, I guess. And, if you got to take class just for SSN, first find the college where you won't have problem getting letter from college for SSN, in case you did not get the job.
