Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales should have considered himself a lucky man when he was allowed to resign in disgrace in August 2007 without being hauled into Congress on perjury or contempt charges.

He was in the thick of President George W. Bush's most damaging attacks on the rule of law. As White House counsel, he helped to justify torture and illegal wiretapping. As attorney general, he politicized the Justice Department. And he misled Congress in both jobs.

He could have told the truth about those things. Or, he could have gone quietly away and waited for a subpoena from the Obama administration. Instead, he is trying for some sort of bizarre comeback by painting himself as an upstanding man victimized by a "mean-spirited town."

In an interview with National Public Radio this week, Gonzales attacked President Obama's choice for attorney general, Eric Holder, for saying that waterboarding is torture.

To hear Gonzales tell it, Holder was in the wrong - not the lawyers like Gonzales who tortured the law to justify torture, or the former defense secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, who approved its use, or the interrogators who actually subjected detainees to waterboarding and other inhumane and illegal interrogation techniques. Making a "blanket pronouncement like that," Gonzales warned, might affect "the morale and dedication" of intelligence officials.

He said agents at the Central Intelligence Agency "no longer have any interest in doing anything controversial." We're certainly glad to hear that. No one in the Bush administration - certainly not Gonzales - has offered evidence that torturing prisoners produced reliable information. It did undermine the law, further endangered American soldiers who might be captured in the field and destroyed the nation's image.

Gonzales did not stop there. He said it was his subordinates' fault that nine U.S. attorneys were fired for obviously political reasons. "I deeply regret some of the decisions made by my staff," he said.

Gonzales had no regrets about the infamous visit he paid to the hospital room of then-Attorney General John Ashcroft in 2004 while he was White House counsel.

Ashcroft was barely conscious after serious surgery, but Gonzales and Andrew Card, then the White House chief of staff, tried to get him to sign off on a program to eavesdrop on Americans without a warrant.

A deputy attorney general, James Comey, rushed to the hospital and managed to thwart the plan. As for reports that the illegal eavesdropping program had prompted threats of a mass resignation by top Justice officials, Gonzales dismissed that with an airy "lawyers often disagree about important legal issues."

Gonzales said he was not worried about being prosecuted for his actions because he was "acting in good faith" and - yes - following orders.

That smug self-assurance should be another powerful reminder to the White House of the need for an unsparing review of all of Bush's policies on torture, wiretapping and executive power.

Only by learning the details of those disastrous decisions can the nation hope to undo the damage and make sure these mistakes are not repeated.

Exclusive: CIA Station Chief in Algeria Accused of Rapes

'Ugly American'? Spy Boss Allegedly Drugged Muslim Women, Made Secret Sex Videos

By BRIAN ROSS, KATE McCARTHY, and ANGELA M. HILL

Jan. 28, 2009—

The CIA's station chief at its sensitive post in Algeria is under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department for allegedly raping at least two Muslim women who claim he laced their drinks with a knock-out drug, U.S. law enforcement sources tell ABC News.

The suspect in the case is identified as Andrew Warren in an affidavit for a search warrant filed in federal court in Washington, D.C. by an investigator for the State Department's Diplomatic Security Service.

Click here to read the affidavit.

Watch "World News with Charles Gibson" TONIGHT at 6:30 p.m. ET for the full report.

Officials say the 41-year old Warren, a convert to Islam, was ordered home by the U.S. Ambassador, David Pearce, in October after the women came forward with their rape allegations in September.

According to the affidavit, the two women "reported the allegations in this affidavit independently of each other."

The affidavit says the first victim says she was raped by Warren in Sept. 2007 after being invited to a party at Warren's residence by U.S. embassy employees.

She told a State Department investigator that after Warren prepared a mixed drink of cola and whiskey, she felt a "violent onset of nausea" and Warren said she should spend the night at his home.

When she woke up the next morning, according to the affidavit, "she was lying on a bed, completely nude, with no memory of how she had been undressed." She said she realized "she recently had engaged in sexual intercourse, though she had no memory of having intercourse."

According to the affidavit, a second alleged victim told a similar story, saying Warren met her at the U.S. embassy and invited her for a "tour of his home" where she said he prepared an apple martini for her "out of her sight."

The second victim said she suddenly felt faint and went to the bathroom where "V2 [victim 2] could see and hear, but she could not move," the affidavit says.

She told investigators Warren "was attempting to remove V2's her pants." The affidavit states, "Warren continued to undress V2, and told her she would feel better after a bath."

Alleged Rape Victims Tell Their Stories to Investigators

The alleged victim said she remembers being in Warren's bed and asking him to stop, but that "Warren made a statement to the effect of 'nobody stays in my expensive sheets with clothes on.'" She told investigators "as she slipped in and out of consciousness she had conscious images of Warren penetrating her vagina repeatedly with his penis."

The second victim told investigators she sent Warren a text message accusing him of abusing her and he replied, "I am sorry," the affidavit says.

According to the affidavit, when Warren was interviewed by Diplomatic Security investigators, he claimed he had "engaged in consensual sexual intercourse" and admitted there were photographs of the two women on his personal laptop. He would not consent to a search or seizure of the computer, leading investigators to seek the warrant.

According to the affidavit, a search of Warren's residence in Algiers turned up Valium and Xanax and a handbook on the investigation of sexual assaults.

The affidavit says toxicologists at the FBI laboratory say Xanax and Valium are among the drugs "commonly used to facilitate sexual assault."

"Drugs commonly referred to as date rape drugs are difficult to detect because the body rapidly metabolizes them," said former FBI agent Brad Garrett, an ABC News consultant. "Many times women are not aware they were even assaulted until the next day," he said.

The CIA refused to acknowledge the investigation or provide the name of the Algiers station chief, but the CIA Director of Public Affairs, Mark Mansfield, said, "I can assure you that the Agency would take seriously, and follow up on, any allegations of impropriety."

State Department Acting Spokesman Robert Wood issued a statement saying, "The U.S. takes very seriously any accusations of misconduct involving any U.S. personnel abroad. The individual is question has returned to Washington and the U.S. Government is looking into the matter."

U.S. officials were bracing for public reaction in the Muslim world, following the report of the allegation.

"It has the potential to be quite explosive if it's not handled well by the United States government," said Isobel Coleman, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations who specializes in women's issues in the Middle East.

"This isn't the type of thing that's going to be easily pushed under the carpet," she said.

U.S. Officials Say They Found Video Tapes

Both women have reportedly since given sworn statements to federal prosecutors sent from Washington to prepare a possible criminal case against the CIA officer.

Following the initial complaints, U.S. officials say they did obtain a warrant from a federal judge in Washington, D.C. in October to search the station chief's CIA-provided residence in Algiers and turned up the videos that appear to have been secretly recorded and show, they say, Warren engaged in sexual acts.

Officials say one of the alleged victims is seen on tape, in a "semi-conscious state."

The time-stamped date on other tapes led prosecutors to broaden the investigation to Egypt because the date matched a time when Warren was in Cairo, officials said.

As the station chief in Algiers, Warren played an important role in working with the Algerian intelligence services to combat an active al Qaeda wing responsible for a wave of bombings in Algeria.

In the most serious incident, 48 people were killed in a bombing in Aug. 2008 in Algiers, blamed on the al Qaeda group.

The Algerian ambassador to the United Nations, Mourad Benmehid, said his government had not been notified by the U.S. of the rape allegations or the criminal investigation.

Repeated messages left for the Warren with his parents and his sister were not returned.

No charges have been filed, but officials said a grand jury was likely to consider an indictment on sexual assault charges as early as next month.

"This will be seen as the typical ugly American," said former CIA officer Bob Baer, reacting to the ABC News report. "My question is how the CIA would not have picked up on this in their own regular reviews of CIA officers overseas," Baer said.

"From a national security standpoint," said Baer, the alleged rapes would be "not only wrong but could open him up to potential blackmail and that's something the CIA should have picked up on," said Baer. "This is indicative of personnel problems of all sorts that run through the agency," he said.

"Rape is ugly in any context," said Coleman, who praised the bravery of the alleged Algerian victims in going to authorities. "Rape is viewed as very shameful to women, and I think this is an opportunity for the U.S. to show how seriously it takes the issue of rape," she said.

Indian Rave Raid Branded’ Overzealous Moral Policing’

25 tourists attending a ‘rave party’ outside Pushkar were arrested and effectively deported this week, after cops seized beer, wine and contraceptives.

The Times Of India criticized the raid and suggested it may have been prompted by rivalries between hotels and the party promoters and noted that the police action meant the tourists’ holidays ‘had turned into a nightmare.’

However, local police chief SP Anand Shrivastav was unsympathetic, accusing the foreigners, 25 of whom were women, of being drunk and found in ‘compromising positions’.

“They were taken to Pushkar police station and their passports have been seized. We've asked the home ministry to deport them to their countries," Meena told the Times. "When the team reached the spot around 3 am, the party was in full swing. Most of them tried to run away when they saw us,” he added.

In more India news, government officials banned smoking in all public places this week, outlawing tobacco in clubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, bus shelters, discos and airports. Goa police also announced new regulations for beach shack owners tightening restrictions on alcohol sales, music and cannabis smoking at the beachside bars.

The crackdown followed the still unsolved murder of 15 year old Brit girl Scarlett Eden Keeling who was raped and killed on Anjuna Beach last year. Prime suspect Samson D’Souza, 29, was released on bail after 7 months on remand this week and insisted he was tortured into confessing by cops.

“To get the confession out of me they initially beat me with their fists,” he told reporters, “Then they used plastic rods to beat my feet. When that didn’t work they used electric shock diodes on my head and body until I said I would confess to anything they wanted. But I am totally innocent,” he said (Daily Mail).

Solo Sex Toys Stigma Declines

Straight British men are embracing increasingly realistic sex dolls and adopting anal toys such as the Naughty Boy Prostate Massager, the Independent revealed this week.

The newspaper interviewed a number of satisfied owners of top-of-the-range sex toys RealDolls all of whom spoke of their $7,000 models as friends and companions.

“I had more fun with Ginger in the first month than I ever had with human women. I had no idea how far it would go. They are more human than anyone I have ever met." ‘Mr G, 41’ from Virginia, who owns two models- Ginger Brooke and Kelly Sue- told the Independent.

“They don't break the law, they don't lie to me, and they aren't going to steal. There is no evil in them. They look the same today as they did when I got them. They aren't going to age. I want to be buried with them,” he added.

Meanwhile in France, high society intellectual/ orgy loving author Catherine Millet chatted to the (London) Times about her new book Jour de Souffrance (Day of Suffering) and revealed that she’s toned down her lifestyle in recent years.

Ms Millet achieved international notoriety in 2001 when she published her 1.2million selling autobiography The Sexual Life of Catherine M in which she detailed having regular sex orgies with up to 20 to 30 men at a time, though this week qualified her passion for sexual freedom for all.

“Sexual freedom suited me for a time but it isn’t the key to happiness. There are other things that come before sex. Your work or family can also be the centre of your life,” she advised.

“Andy Warhol once said we should show kids the sexual act very early because they would understand it isn’t that big a deal. He is saying that we give sex too much importance,” she added.

Chatting about her first book in 2002 in which she admitted remembering just 49 names of the countless hundreds who penetrated her, she was equally candid about her motivations.

'I was carried by the conviction that I rejoiced in extraordinary freedom,” she told the Observer.

“To fu(k above and beyond any sense of disgust was not just a way of lowering oneself, it was to raise yourself above all prejudice. There are those who break taboos as powerful as incest. I settled for not having to choose my partners,” she explained.

"Over the last ten years, British holidaymakers have rediscovered the national tradition of world exploration thanks to the ease and speed of internet booking and cheaper flights. This means that, more than ever, the British public are embracing different cultures from across the globe.” (Metro, UK) Elena Antoniou, of lastminute.com comments on a new study revealing that British women consider German men to be ‘sexiest in the world’.

Saudi Cleric Tackles Two Eyed Temptresses

A leading Muslim cleric has called for women to wear veils that reveal just one eye, explaining that ‘showing both eyes encourages women to use eye make-up to look seductive’ (BBC).

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan, said to have ‘wide influence among religious Saudis’ by the BBC, made his sartorial suggestions on top Muslim satellite channel Al-MAdj, just as the Independent reviewed new dating guide 'How to Make Anyone Fall in Love With You: 85 Proven Techniques for Success'.

Writing in the guide, romance expert Leil Lowndes specifically emphasizes the importance of ‘sticky eyes’, in an uncanny endorsement of the Sheik’s suggestions.

“When you are talking to your quarry, let your eyes stay glued to his or hers a little longer than necessary - even during silences,” he advises, “A gaze that lingers awakens primal, slightly disturbing feelings. It induces the same "fight or flight" chemicals that race through our veins when we feel infatuation,” he added.

The guide however, also recommends further seduction tips that could work with one eye.

“For girls, take sneak peeks at his body - and when he sees you pretend you are a little embarrassed,” Lowndes suggested, “This should really get his juices flowing and is a great way to get a friend to think of you sexually.”

In more religion/ romance news, Muslim cleric Professor Is-haq Akintola addressed the thorny issue of homosexuality in Nigeria this week, calling on authorities to introduce rehabilitation centers for homosexuals.

Intriguingly, the cleric blamed Nigeria’s notoriously overcrowded ‘stone age barbaric’ prison system for turning more and more men gay, citing ‘body contacts that stir up lust as their emotions, sentiments and sensibilities go hay-wire’, and proposed a final solution for eradicating both prison over-crowding and gays.

“Homosexuality is a great sin in Islam. It is as grievous as adultery, and the punishment is the same,” the Professor told the Sunday Sun, “Homosexuals are to be condemned to death.”

Meanwhile in Cameroon, authorities continue to arrest and jail people for being gay, according to a report on RadioNetherlands this week, causing terror in the West African country (which borders Nigeria)

"If you wear an earring, if you are too handsome, too nice, too cute, very elegant, or wear very trendy clothes, just that could land you in prison on charges of homosexuality,” leading Cameroonian lawyer Alice Nkom told the Dutch station.

In related news, London Stock Exchange vicar Rev Mr Mullen was accused of being homophobic this week after he wrote on his blog that gays should be tattooed with health warnings on their bodies.

"Let us make it obligatory for homosexuals to have their backsides tattooed with the slogan SODOMY CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH and their chins with FELLATIO KILLS,” he suggested.

The vicar subsequently claimed he was ‘only joking’ and added ‘anybody with an ounce of sense of humour or any understanding of the tradition of English satire would immediately assume that they're light-hearted jokes’. (Daily Telegraph).

Sudan’s Tight Trouser Terror

30 Girls wearing tight trousers were arrested and beaten by cops in Sudan this week after being suspected of being members of youth gangs ‘known for drinking, fighting and public nudity’. (Edinburgh Evening News).

The girls faced three months in jail for violating new laws criminalising ‘bad behaviour and the importation of illicit cultures’, though were released after Gender Minister Mary Kinden Kimbo stepped in.

"Girls were picked up from points like in the church and were hurled into police lorries and taken to the police station, some of them were beaten up, that is why the girls were very distressed," the Sudanese politician told the BBC.

"I am against the police taking action single-handedly to round up everybody and start beating them because that is not their job,” she added.

The dangers of tight trousers were previously emphasised in 2003 when Canadian scientists published a paper on women suffering from paresthesia, described as a tingling, burning nerve sensation experienced by women whose trousers were pinching a nerve.

A survey of British men in 2000 also revealed that half were putting their health at risk by squeezing into too right trousers, in order to deny the grim reality of their expanding waistlines.

"Men tend to stand in front of the mirror and pull in their stomachs, and then think they look okay,” Professor Stephen Gray, of Nottingham Trent University told the BBC.

"For the same reason, they will squeeze into trousers which are too small because they don't want to admit they have put on weight,” he added, “But wearing trousers too small often means they are worn under the gut, and that only exacerbates their stomachs."

The Guardian also revealed some years ago that trousers are the garment ‘responsible for more accidents than any other in the UK’, with an estimated 3,695 visiting hospital emergency wards a year, according to ROSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

While 700 men were treated for accidents caused by zips in their pants in 2002, many more hurt themselves by "accidentally tripping because of a wide-flared trouser" and "putting your trousers on too quickly, losing your balance, and falling over", ROSPA spokesperson Karen Blanchette told the BBC.

Tight trouser issues were also highlighted by Sex Pistol singer Johnny Rotten in an interview with the Sun in 2005 in which he taunted rival pop star Bono from U2.

"Bono, Sting and Bob have formed this ridiculous blessed trilogy – stop preaching, please,” he begged.

"Every time I see Bono in those big fly glasses and tight leather pants I just can't hack it. I can't see that as solving the world's problems. He's crushing his testicles in tight trousers for world peace,” said Lydon.
