Hi,

My brother is applying to US for computer science for fall 2010. Like all sisters, I don't want him to struggle here for tuition. He is trying to get a good score in SAT right now.Can anyone refer to a good college that gives good scholarship. We are looking for full scholarship or tuition/board around $6-7000 per year. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

RG

Its a tough call unfortunately. Try Texas A&M, if he gets a really good SAT score, he might have a chance, provided that his essay is upto par with the score, that is.

Also try Swarthmore, PA or Susquehenna, PA and BYU, Utah.

Hope that he ACES the SATs. No less than 750 in Maths and 580 in English, also advise him to take SAT Math test (Subject test).

If it does not work out. Oh well get into a cheap school, study for a semester or two, take the SATs and take a transfer.

what do you mean by good? 100%? it's difficult but not impossible. i'm on full scholarship from my freshman year. am graduating this december. the first year, i was lucky that i got it (i applied from nepal). then, had to work my ass off to maintain good gpa and renew scholarship each year.

you don't get scholarship just like that, it is really tough. and full is even harder. luck and labor- you need both. tell your brother to work hard. labor pays.

Hi,

Thanks! You are an example to my brother. Could you also mention the college where you got full scholarship and if you can brief on the main points you had worked hard on in order to get it. At least my brother will be trying in a right direction. If you have any suggestion, please feel free to write. I would really (really) appreciate it!

first, let him search for and you too help him find good, cheap schools. few are already named above. if his slc, isc, toefl, sat scores, essay are quite impressive, any first tier college <80 rank will be willing to offer quite decent or near-full scholarships. if there are few nepalis already attending the college, there is a higher chance of getting in if the nepalis have been showind decent performance. besides the 'involuntary' scores in tests, the essay is the 'voluntary' key. you can bend the essay in any direction and draft it to your maximum benefit as it is one criteria heavily judged upon. all others will have good/bad scores too but it is the essay that really separates you from the others. be as genuine as possible. don't throw in any big words unnecessarily. just be yourself while writing it. answer the asked essay question with sincerity and try to show the real picture.

once he gets in, he needs to maintain the gpa. and also seek for more funding sources, like departmental, some organizational, research, etc grants. studying in a first tier college is quite hard in the US, no matter what others have told you. one needs to be sincere in studies and be ready to put generous amount of time. success follows labor.

in case your brother doesn't get full scholarship, don't panic. with whatever he's collected, attend the college. and work to get more money. life is hard, it's no lie. also make him apply to some liberal arts colleges even if his choice is to study something else. once he gets financially stabilized, the general classes taken at liberal arts college can be easily transferred to a big university of choice.

i hope this helps. if you need more info, pm me, rather than posting here as i use sajha once in 2 or 3 days only.
