Hey guys,

I will be graduating this December and I have no luck finding a job. I am a CS Major. I have had dozen of interviews and my interview is short lived whenever they ask, "Will you in future need sponsorship?"
I have technical experience but still its not enough.

I applied to one company opening via monster. The recruiter name was desi and after 1 hour of applying he called me and talked like I could be hired and placed in a project after 4 weeks of training. I don't get it! For that position they list compensation as 65-75k.

I simply don't understand. How?

Anyway the main question here is have any of you gone through similar desi consultancy and had success? If so then please mention. I will greatly appreciate it.

Right now market is tough and it might be wise to get into consultancy and get some ideas but at the same time apply to various companies or look for a good university for higher studies if you only did you undergraduate or get some part time job for your expenses.

landing a job through a consultancy entirely depends on you and the marketing team of the consultancy which plays a good role in getting you an interview. so getting into right consultancy which have good connection with vendors is very important. but ultimately, what matters is how you perform your interviews.

Since you are in CS, you won't have hard time learning codes so it would be smoother for you to learn any new languages. you have to sweat your balls learning new stuff in a very close time frame that people usually take years in the industry. you have to learn what technologies people use in the company and how they work.

marketing: after they train (now when i say train: you have to learn everything by yourself) you, you'll learn about your resume which
will be manipulated with 5 years of resume. you'll learn how to lie
about your experiences with different technologies in the interview. again,  right now because of the market, you might get hard time getting an interview because there aren't much. you might face intense competition from brothers from our neighbor so you have to work really hard. you might fail on couple of interviews but if you do, you should take those interviews as a learning experiences and focus on your weakness.

but that is not enough, if you get a job and since the job is not an entry level job but a job of 5 years of experiences because you will be lying while in interview that you have 5 years of exp, you have to quickly adapt to the working environment and learn everything in a very short period of time. you may have to work more than 8 hours a day just to learn and adapt to the kind of work they are doing. remember, getting a job might be easy but keeping it is difficult.

finally, management of the consultancy: while in consultancy, you have to go through the management of the consultancy and you might feel that you are working in some third grade company somewhere in India. most of them will treat you like you have no employee rights and give you trouble. you might feel bad about it and may even think about quitting the consultancy because the way they treat you.
but all in all, if you focus and don't care about different political stuff that might erupt in the room, you'll get out of there quickly.

pay: pay is not much compare to what is actually paid for the kind of job you'll be performing. they might sign you a contract that will say that  you are bind to work with the consultancy for one year and you can't work with client for one year if you quit the consultancy. the benefits and vacations they give you might give you a thought that it is not for a human being.

but as long as the money rolls into your account, you should be okay. maybe after you work for couple of years with consultancy and you can move to full time job.

about me: I don't belong to any consultancy. my feedback reflects my experiences that i had when i was in one couple of years back

Dolphin-

Thank you for such a great insight. I just felt I am being hit with the reality for the first time. Never knew the system was so complex and flawed. I guess it's time to wake up and smell the coffee. After years of hard work and all the shit I've been through (we all do nothing exceptional) I still got to lie in order to get a job. heh! Not fair. I don't blame the system perhaps I should have known my capability and what I was getting into before hand.

TruthSpeaker-
Eplanet Baagbazzar?

I'm talking about consultancy based in the US. I request you to stop posting in my thread if you don't have anything constructive to say.

the first thing you need to do is know what language and industry you want to work with. IT is a huge field so you have to make a wise decision on where you want to go. based on that, you choose the consultancy. there are millions of the consultancies in NJ/NY area. just give them call randomly and ask them about what they train and market. learn about different consultancies in desicrunch.com

questions you might wanna consider:
are you back end guy, likes hard core programming
languages: C/C++, Java, Perl, C#, visual basic, sharepoint
are you a frond end guy, likes web designing
JSP, PHP, ASP, CGI, ruby on rails, flash, animation
do you want to get into database
what databases there are sybase, oracle
do you want to be a developer or DBA if you like database

do you like working with tools
CRYSTAL REPORT, BUSINESS OBJECTS. DATASTAGE, SAP, PEOPLESOFT,

Sorry to buzz in. Do Indian consultancies work around College graduates with Finance/Accounting/Business majors?

I feel that this question is bit off the track. Recommending a good consultancy does not mean that you will get sponsered for H1B. You have to land in a job in a company that sponcers your H1B.

However, these days many people are getting H1B sponcered by Indian consultancies without a project (i.e without payroll). In such people just hang in there until they get a project. Once one gets a project and gets into a payroll he/she will have opportunity to explore other company and transfer the H1B for better job. But if a person did not get a project then he/she is stuck there. There is no way out.

Quagmire Jee,

I don't have very clear answer to your question. However, posting your resume (especially in dice.com) will attract calls from Indian companies.

Nontheless, the Indian consulting companies are more absored to IT field. And what I have seen is that their approach is mainly on the non-US graduates. Very little percent of US graduates approach to Indian IT companies.

I also have seen that the resume format and details vary in greater degree if you compare non-US vs US graduates. You will see lot of fakes in non-US graduates.

dhoti_prasad,

I don't need sponsorship, so I'm willing to start a career ( with decent pay ) in any field that I qualify for. That's all. I'll give dice.com a shot. Any more suggestions?

Quagmire,

Pyaradeshbasiharu,

I don't think you got what I was asking. I don't need any sponsorship but I'm willing to work with DHOTI consultancies - provided that I'm making over 30k / year. I need a start. I applied in various companies via craigslist, and all I got was spammers asking me to pay for application fees.

if you have papers why are you looking for desi consultancies to fake your resume and find you a job with 1-3 months of training. it's better to start out with something small and move up in any company honestly rather than cheating some one with 5 years of fake experence. If you like computers and IT so much then u should to go school and get a degree in computer science and then apply for entry level jobs. most desi consultancies now a days are scared to do anything. they don't like people with papers  cuz they won't be on a leash.
