Dashain Tika & Jamara Celebration
Jonesboro, October 17
Nepalese students at Jonesboro observed Tika and Jamara function at 208 State Street Apartment on October 17, 2010. They started puja function early in the morning, and participated in Tika. Elder students offered red Tika and Jamara to juniors and new coming students. Isn't that unique? Tika receiving, a unique Nepali tradition—with red color Tika on forehead, yellow Jamara, and a big smile on face of Nepalis students—was something new for their next door Chinese and American friends and neighbors. Many of them stood by their doors and watched Nepali students. Students walked around in group and took several pictures. "This Tika at least remained my family members back to home in Nepal" said a freshman. They were very happy and joyous in the day. Another graduate student said "now I can show my Tika on forehead when I sit for talk on Skype". Although students did not have enough materials of celebration/observation in their apartments, they worked in group with limited resources. Each member cooked very delicious foods that gave a strong memory of past Dashain.
