Rememer in old days people used to get paid in Salt and Rice for the work, think you are that kind of worker who is getting bonuses for your defences of the gas station against the elements.

I can't lie.
I can't cheat.
I can't steal.
Why am I so 'Lati' ?

I dont blame you for taking things from him cause I have also worked under heartless people so I understand.
Like maxpayne said, just think of it as getting paid for what you do. All those things that you take are like the pay raises that your dhoti boss never gives you.

We are in short of money and ample of frustations going around us which compels us to look for alternate routes. Also, ppl proudly admit they have stealing stuffs from their work place and I guess that encites lot of us too . At the end of the day, the question you need to ask urself is "Can I live my life with that guilt?" Remember, our state of frustations and lack of money is fleeting. Your not gonna be this way all your life. You may not be a millionaire but things gonna turn around so consider at that point you will be recalling these days and will say "I struggled so hard to get to this point and stole a lot of stuffs too. I am so proud of my self". If you think you can deal with it, go for it. There is nothing to prove to anybody its just you. Just do not do anything you will regret all your life.
Last but the least, my favorite quotation from my favorite philosphy teacher: "The end doesnot justify the means"

Life is a complex mixture of emotions, desires and realities. At the end of the day, everyone craves for the mental well being. A clear conscience is the indicator of mental well being.

A clear conscience is a consequence of not going over one's unethical zone. Each person has their own spectrum of ethical vs unethical, so different people can have clear conscience inspite of doing something that is generally considered unethical.

Ethics can be a cumulative sum total of one's own personal goals and frustrations and one's aptitude for evaluation of self worth.

For some people, it doesn't matter and for some people it makes a big deal. That's why some people live simple law abiding lives, and others not so law abiding lives.

Where does this stealing lie on the pH scale of ethics? probably on the OK side thats why you do it. But be sure to run the pH test few times because depending upon different environment, the test scores can vary. Ultimately you will make the right choice that will give you a clear conscience and decrease the chances of having to spend time in prison.

I would rather leave that gas station if Dhoti will make me work my ass off than to opt for stealing!
Eating food while u are working there is okay but stealing money and goods is not justifiable. Leave that work and live a life with dignity working at a different place sir! You would not have to post a thread like this in Sajha again.

My opinion about this issue is that you always have a choice. The choice to work at the gas station was solely yours and yet you seek justification in stealing money and goods. This is black and white issue, stealing is not justifiable in any case. If you think that your boss is making you work your ass off and not paying you accordingly then please walk away, you always have that choice and stop bitching out here and look for any compensation by seeking others who might jump to support you. Anyone who does is in a similar fking mind set as yours and you all are wrong.

Between gas station work /stealing money and consultancies blowing up resumes with 5-10 years of false experience please understand that it all falls under stealing and cheating people and wrong under the same moral and ethical principal. Some people don't have much guilt about doing so as they don't see anything wrong with it and some do. It all depends on what you think and as i stated earlier my take is both are fking WRONG.

@IT_KETI: First of all, Thanks for bringing this interesting topic which is relevant to almost all the nepalese students who had/are worked/working in gas-station.

So here's my take.

While in my college days, I always use to question myself about the same issue. Is it ethical to steal stuff from dhoti while i only get paid $6 an hour and had to bust my ass off ? If stealing is not ethical, why is dhoti stealing my right to getting paid the minimum wage? Why are my employee rights stolen? When i worked on american owned motel, couple of customers vandalized the room and i was the one that was penalized $1000 for it? Was that legal? If it is not, why i am responsible for that?

So basically, it just doesn't only happen in gas station. It happens everywhere, in motel, gas-station and even in restaurants. We, immigrants are exploited one way or another. Either it is a money based or service based. After thinking about it too much, although i got exploited, i just couldn't do it. So now the question comes, why didn't i do it?

First of all, i would say i couldn't do it because I haven't stolen money in my whole life. During childhood, I stole comics from the bookstore which I don't count. The reason for not counting it is just like krishna stealing yogurt during childhood ;-). So i would think if i haven't stolen money until now, why would i do it now? Will i be happy feeling afterwards although no body will see it? What if i got caught stealing some dollars/items which might hamper my immigration status? Someone said that, It's always hard to steal something for the first time. After that, you have less fear to do it again.Questions like this always hovered around my mind and hence i couldn't do it.

Now the question comes how long would you continue getting exploited? Well i would say, Find a better job or suffer like it until you graduate.

@chaurey: Although i agree with almost all your opinion but not about faking resume. Almost all people(american, indian) does it. I don't know if you are aware or not, there is also a american owned company which specializes in giving false references for your resume for money. So stealing money/faking resume are two different conditions. While stealing money from anywhere is strictly illegal and can be penalized but faking resume hasn't been illegal until now. Even the HR knows that every people tweak their resume here/there to get job.

Last but not least, just to remind you, Krishna asked Yudhistir to kill dronacharya by cheating saying that his son "Aswathama" is dead. That was also a cheat but it was for good purpose to gain victory for himself/humanity.

Hope this helps!

Peace

Oh come on. Give me a break if you're trying to liken your situation to that of a slave (like Africans brought into America). You're not forced into working for that guy, are you? If you're really that discontent, just quit the job and start looking for something better. I don't get all these whiny characters who make it sound like you were chained and beaten to work for an Indian or a Pakistani.

One of my buddies worked graveyard shifts for one full year (7 days a week) and didn't steal a single penny. Compare his position 3 years ago to now being a successful Engineer making decent amount of dough on his own. More often than not, stealing leads to thirst for immediate success and it becomes an addiction.

Again, there's no justification to stealing. If you're dissatisfied with your work, quit whining, and try to find a better job.

I am not just talking about tweaking resumes here and there. I am talking about faking a complete resume with 5-10 years of experience, those are fraudulent resumes and under the US labor law act ...... punishable jail time and fine for up to $$$ and Time.... It's still a black and white case in my eyes. Tweaking resume to make it more appealing with real time experience vs fraudulent 5-10 years experience is a whole different thing.

I agree that it might be hard to prosecute and/or provide evidence of fraudulent resume and the level of fraudulent information given by the employee on the resume. However; there are labor laws (State and Federal) that classify resume fraud as being illegal.

Statutory law
At least 11 states (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, North
Dakota, Oregon, Texas, and Washington) have currently enacted laws that make
misrepresentation of employment qualifications a criminal offense. Five states—Kentucky, New
Jersey, North Dakota, Oregon, and Washington—have classified this practice as a felony
punishable by several years in prison. The remaining states consider résumé fraud to be a
misdemeanor.

-As of 2008, not sure what the current standing is on this.

@chaurey: I may believe you on that but how come this companies like http://careerexcuse.com/ are not penalized or shut down? This site was criticized by CareerBuilder.com/Monster but it is still prevalent.

Why is the law not blocking those sites and punishing the owner???

Can you answer my question?

Thanks

I am in no position to provide any answers to you for your query and yes i do agree with you 100% that such sites need to be shut down no doubt. As to why or why not question  is not what I am talking about. To that effect i strongly agree with you on ethical grounds that this is wrong and if this site is being hosted from US borders the Feds need to take action in bringing it down. IF not then this is again the same type of issue wiki leaks or online gambling sites have posed to the US authorities that is make it hard for them to shut down sites that are being hosted abroad.

i started a thread earlier to another question, but it answers my reaction to this question.

view thread here: http://sajha.com/sajha/html/index.cfm?threadid=91276

read the text below:

Someone says second recession is here.

When did the first recession end, in the first place?

No matter where the first one ended and where the second one will start, personally I am not bothered by these developments. I am not saying it will not shake the job demographics but I am ready to work my rear off and ride the wave as it comes.

My reasoning -

My parents survived on "sukeko khursani" and "dhido" until well over their working lives, and I was obliged to experience it for nearly a quarter century - that was until i came here to the US. My grandfather carted salt packs to Dhankuta from Dharan on foot and the return journey alone, according to what he said, used to take full 7-days those days, all these to make a living and to bring us to this world.

Blessed as I am to be his “naati,” and in that light, if I remember each day the reason for my being here in the US, or why I should be frugal in my spending habits, or why I should reason out my expenses, not be a "makkhichoos," or not benefit at other's expense, or why it is important to extend a helping hand, and be thankful that poor as you are, you have a clean bill of health, these trillions that come and go in this country's expenditure/debt cycle will leave less of an impact on you and me. Not because it is easy, but the pain subsides that much more and lifts your spirits a little lighter.

I have seen Nepalis who cannot pay their 10K credit balance, accrued through tuition and million other reasons, head out to a bar every single weekend. I have seen others ensnared in the debt trap yet so eager to live life well beyond their financial means. I hate to do that part of mathematics for them.

I have waited tables, worked as a janitor, cleaned miles of high-rise lobbies and survived slaving on a zillion gas stations, with my head held high and with a sense of pride that at the end of each day I returned to my “dera” with a wee bit of financial security - something that Nepal in its Buddha-Ra-Mt.Everest-Nepal-Bhitra-Chaa attitude never accorded to over 90% of its citizens, including my parents and some of yours.

So come what may, tax raise or bumps, recession or remuneration, I am with this country riding the financial wave as it comes and will see how it goes from there.

What do you think?

Thanks Chaurey for your response.

Here's what i found from that website

What will CareerExcuse do for me?

Once you choose your plan and outsource your job references to us, we will supply you with a real company name, along with branch address and "800" number within 24 hours and have operators on standbye to give any inquirers your information that you created.

How many applications can I use my new history on?

Unlimited, fill as many out until you get that job.

Can I choose any employment field?

You should choose a field, that you have knowledge about, experience in and or familiar with. We will refuse Police/Fire/Med/Gov.

Can I choose employment dates and salary?

Yes

Can I pick the name of the company or use a past employer?

Yes, Our premier Job Reference Service is your plan of choice if you desire this service.

Does CareerExcuse Require a Written Authorized Release Form?

Yes. All background check requests, must be authorized and signed by you. This is called a Authorized Release Form. Anyone wishing to examine your references must provide to us a signed copy of the Authorization Release Form before we release you references, as is customary at HR departments. YOU can waive this procedure if you choose to do so.

What will CareerExcuse tell future employers when they call?

When someone inquires about your references, they will be directed to a human resources dept. where they are instructed to fax, or e-mail, a Authorized Release Form and their Employment Verification Form.

As always, CareerExcuse.com will Email you as soon as someone calls! When a Employment Verification Form is received by us, we will forward you a copy of the completed form to your e-mail address the same day!

Will a "live" operator answer every time someone calls?

If you chose a job reference service plan that includes a live operator, then a live operator will answer every call where information can be provided to any inquires.

What if I choose the Voice Mail Plan?

In the "real world" and mostly due to call volume Voice Mail is a common form of communication. If you choose our Voice Mail Plan, callers are first directed to a professional v-mail system where they will be asked to leave any employment verification requests so our Human Resources Department can contact them with your references you provided us.. Again, as in the "real world", Employment Verification is mostly done per email and fax request. (To see a list of most commonly asked questions on a reference check..Click Here..) A operator is always available by pushing 0, and will always call them back asap. For those wanting to contact a "supervisor" for professional references, he/she will be available thru a extension number where they will reach his/her voicemail. If you requested other professional references, each will be given alternative phone numbers where they will be directed to a personal v-mail system and a operator will call them back.

How will I know if anyone calls?

We will send you a e-mail when someone calls about you and supply the contact person, company name, email address, and phone number.

What about my privacy?

For your protection we do not collect or share any personal information about you, such as your name, mailing address or credit card number.

Can I add or change information on my references?

YES! You are given a personal account number that identifies you and a specific email address to correspond with us on any changes or additions to your references when you sign up. We also set up a forum with a "help" section to help you with any quick questions you may have. This forum is monitored regularly by the owner of careerexcuse.com who is committed to you getting everything you paid for.

Is misinformation on a resume illegal?

No, Since a resume is not a legal document, it is not illegal to misrepresent on a resume.

Can I get caught and fired?

We can't guarantee that you wont and not liable if you do. If you get the job in the first place..we did our part. It's up to you to act responsible after you get the job.

You make any guarantees or promises?

We Guarantee.. that you will receive job interviews within 30 days or we will add additional job references and make as many revisions to your job references AT NO COST TO YOU!

If after 60 days you do not receive an inquiry from a prospective employer, we will refund your subscription * Allow 15-30 days as refund must be in a form of a check.

We Will PAY YOU $50 if an inquiry is made on your job references and you do not get a job offer within 30 days. Simply fax a rejection letter to us and allow 15-30 days to receive your check.

Footy,

My words exactly. I'd rather quit working than whine about my misery and seek justification for something which is incorrect.

Remember, it is YOU who chose to work for that person who happens to be an Indian and presumably illegally (I apologize if you have a work permit, but the nature of the post makes me believe you do not).

And what's up with the moniker Dhoti again? Calling him Dhoti only makes you a 'Bahadur' don't you think?

While we're at it, I really can't comprehend how people label Indian consultants as crooks, thieves and so on. Based on my understanding, they train you for free, also providing accomodation (hear some do charge some fee) and bulk up your resume heavily so that one could easily get the job. Once you get the job, they keep a hefty sum of the salary but even then, you end up making 20-30 bucks an hour.

Now if someone were to tell me that they had been hired by Wells Fargo, Chase, Ebay, Google etc based on personal applications, and Indians had actually milked them for doing nothing, then I'd have stood by their side. But it appears that more often than not, people opt for IT consultancies because they can't find any decent job on their own, so instead of working 8-10 bucks/hour job, Indian consultancies 'use' them, recruit them and then also 'milk' them. But in any case, regardness of how much money they make, I can't fathom the outcries of people over commissions kept by Indian consultancies when ironically, had it been for the individuals applying themselves, they'd not have got the job in the first place.

Funny thing is, I was looking into some BA/Sap Fico training myself and if I were in need to maintain my status, I'd probably have enrolled in one of those trainings myself....

But again, in all honesty, I really don't see how people can even complain over it and label them as crooks.

Footy given your point is valid that international students may not get equal chance of getting hired by a US company due to visa status and H1B work authorization headaches I agree with you on that. However; if you fail to see how these crooks are running the show by blowing up resumes and falsifying work experience that you never had, how do you justify that? In my mind it is pretty evident that these people are misleading a prospective employery by providing false information presented in their resume. Yes, I agree that a resume is not a legal document and employers have the burden of conducting a background information on each candidate but these consultancies are putting their own people as refrences and lying to the employer. Again i do agree that the lack of strict background checks in part of the prospective employer is a control failiure as well.

I do agree that some IT consultancies put together a comprehesive training package where they train their consultants before marketing them off. However; I do also know that most of these IT consultanting companies run training session only during weekends and focus more on how to lie when taking a client call, that is if they are given the chance to take a client call as most client calls are taken for the candidate by another person (AKA also known as proxy caller who takes the end client interview over the phone for the consultant who is being marketed) if this is not fraudulent then I don't know what is.

I am not going to change my views about  these IT consultancies that are wrong. What is wrong is wrong. It might have worked out for lot of people but then that does not make it right.

I apologize on my part for not putting my words across eloquently. My comment was supposed to be an aside from the original question or the main topic - that is, the morality issue.

You're absolutely right, cheating is cheating and what they do is wrong, too. I meant to find the rationale in labelling them as thugs/cheating scumbags yada yada by Nepali 'victims' who'd otherwise fail to land a job that paid 12 bucks an hour.

So again, yeah, bulking up the resumes, faking it, tweaking with it or doing whatever is absolutely wrong and I condone it too but the recruits playing the victim card aren't right either.
